hout the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Both Grace and Harry have taken Produce Safety Training and received their certifications, helping to ensure that your food is safe for your whole family. Grace made her public commitment to bettering the environment for animals, plants and humans on the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, when she was in the 8th grade. She has been active in outdoor activities since a very young age, and environmental organizations since high school. Grace majored in Zoology and Wildlife Management as an undergraduate, received her MS in Animal Ecology, and earned a PhD in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation. She is a retired Wildlife Ecologist who has received awards from Iowa State University, The Ding Darling Foundation, University of Florida, The Wildlife Disease Association, the U.S. Navy, USDA Forest Service, Redwood Environmental Education Institute, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, USGS National Wildlife Health Center, and other organizations. She has several scientific papers to her credit, and is also a published, award-winning poet. Grace has also been active in labor and social issues since a young age, and was recognized for some of her actions by the Unitarian-Universalist Association Florida District while living in Gainesville, FL. She first grew tomatoes before she was 10 yrs old, became an organic farmer in her 20s, and ran a small organic farm in Northern California for about 9 years. She and Harry garden organically and grow many of their own vegetables and staples, especially garlic, greens, tomatoes and peppers. They are setting up a hoop-house so they can offer more and better produce to their community on a year-round basis. Harry has held a wide variety of positions. He worked on a small cow-calf operation, helped maintain an historic hotel, was a 4-H Agent, provided rehabilitation counseling for people injured in mining accidents, and sold scientific supplies and equipment. Throughout most of his career he worked with industry and academic researchers who needed high-end optical equipment to meet their goals. More recently, he has been providing one-on-one sales training to a variety of individuals. Rather than the hard-sell, "sign-here, get-out-your-checkbook" approach, Harry strives to understand a customer's needs and challenges. Then, whether the client is an award-winning biomedical researcher, an internationally recognized industrial metallurgist, or a print-shop employee who has been tasked with finding new clients, they work together to determine the best solutions. Harry has enjoyed spelunking (cave exploration and mapping), backpacking, and whitewater rafting for many years, is a fantastic cook, and is now becoming a birder. He has headed the Town of New Glarus Parks Commission for several years, and is on the board of the South Central Chapter of the Wisconsin Farmers Union. He and Grace are working together to improve wildlife habitat on their own property, and participate in other local efforts also. They enjoy cooking together, listening to a wide variety of music, woodworking, collecting and refurbishing antique tools, and attending auctions and flea markets. As you can see, our mission statement is more than just words to us. It is our commitment to our customers; we do walk our talk.

Can you give a little bit to help an amazing baker buy a dedicated bread oven so she can serve our south central Wisconsin community even more than she is already doing?

I have marveled at some of Tierney's creations on the Rooted Collective 201 (Blanchardville) FB page. I just wish I could indulge in them regularly!

Please share this with folks who appreciate high quality baked goods and wish to support small businesses! Thank you!

I was really hoping this year would be a better one for me health-wise, but that is not the case. I seem to be more sensitive to heat than ever, with FM/CFS keeping me from accomplishing much when the temp is above ~75F. Wimp!!! Hard to believe I grew up in California's Central Valley and played, rode horses, worked outside with temps routinely in the 90s.

That said, I did take advantage of some volunteer lettuces and enjoyed a few salads and some lettuce soup earlier this year. Asparagus provided a few meals and there is some asparagus lasagna in the freezer. My neighbor Nancy and I took advantage of an abundance of tomato and pepper seedlings from her daughter. It looks like we have at least 3 varieties of tomatoes (paste, beefsteak type and a large pear-shaped one) and two of peppers. Some of the tomato plants are getting really huge. I will need to cut them back so they don't totally take over the space and smother the peppers.

Time for lunch. Have a great day!

Out to harvest rhubarb . . .

05/09/2025

We have LOTS of rhubarb available. Organically grown, not certified. This will be USDA Grade Fancy (diameter >=1") and No. 1 (diameter 3/4" - 1"), at least 10" long, well trimmed, and will exceed the visual requirements for the grades in terms of color and any scratches, scars, damage, etc.

Prices are a bit crazy out there these days: saw some at ~$14-15/lb, another at $10.60, and a couple around $5. So, $4/lb for less than 10 lb, $3.50/lb 10 lb up to 20 lbs, $3.00/lb over 20 lb. Do you need more than 50 lbs, or want to schedule a weekly purchase? Contact us through Messenger. Pick up on farm, please arrange, or contact us to see if we are available. Delivery can be arranged, depending on amount and distance.

USDA Ag Marketing Services reports used to be available and updated weekly with prices for both conventionally and organically grown, retail and wholesale, and different regions of the country. Guess what? Could not get those today. Notice of interruption was posted in JANUARY!!!

Grace is taking a break from working at the Candle Cocoon-candle and soap making supplies physical facility 2 days/week, so she can now do other things (Book Club!) on Tuesdays and Saturdays! She will still be answering the phone, helping people learn to make candles and get their own businesses started, learn about ingredients for B&B products, etc., as she has been for 12+ years.

We will be doing some gardening, but limited in scope. Harry is having his 1st knee replacement surgery on May 5, so gardening will be tough for him. We do have space for folks who would like to grow some of their own food. We grow organically. No synthetic fertilizers, no Round-Up, no neonicitinoids.

Also, due to physical health challenges (Grace's back, Harry's knees) it has been hard to keep up on various projects around the place. If you have even an hour to spare, one time or on a regular basis, help cleaning up the gardens and the woods would be appreciated. In return, you could find yourself with an abundance of asparagus or green onions or rhubarb, firewood, native plants for your garden, who knows what else . . . not to mention appreciation and good company.

Folks - thank you for continuing to check out our page in spite of the lack of activity. Health issues have seriously curtailed our gardening/farming activities over the last 2+ years, but we still try to grow a little bit of our own food and visit at least our New Glarus Farmers Market as often as possible.

I am trying s few things to get my fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue under control, and Harry has started the process to get his knees replaced, so maybe we can once again help feed our community.

That all said, if anyone needs up to 4000 sq ft of garden space (some of it needs a LOT of work!) let us know!

The storms (wave after wave of them!) did some damage to trees, including an aged crab-apple too close to the house. We were able to get into the driveway last night, but had to move a small branch that was across the walkway to the house. Time to get out and see how bad it is . . .

Hey, folks - due to ongoing health issues (my back, FM & CFS; Harry's knees) we are not doing much in the way of gardening. We likely will have more asparagus and rhubarb than we can use, as well as green and walking onions. We also have garden space available if you need some; with ~4000 sq ft of beds that have been in use for various lengths of time, some with trellises in place, different exposures, we should be able to find a spot that works ofr you. Organic practices only - any herbicides or insecticides or soil additives must be cleared with me before use. Reply here, or message us.
