I know it’s a little early to say this, and I should probably shut my mouth, but the garden looks AMAZING. 🌱

The weather we’ve had through the first part of June has been absolutely epic, and it looks like it’s going to continue. This is exactly what we need.

June can be the wild card. A cool June really slows things down, but a nice warm June? Man, these gourds are so happy.

Everything is taking off, and I am so excited to see what the rest of the season brings! 🎃☀️🌿

Good morning, gourd friends!

I’m excited to share that my article, “Bring on the Birds! The Symbiotic Relationship Between Gourds and Birds,” is featured in the Summer 2026 edition of The Gourd Magazine.

This is a topic I’m truly passionate about. Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand how birds and gourds can work together to create healthier, more vibrant gardens.

I’ve included a preview, but you’ll need a copy of the magazine to read the full article! The Gourd Magazine is published by the American Gourd Society (AGS) and is available as part of an AGS membership. To learn more or join, visit the American Gourd Society website.

Cheers to 2026! 🌱 Our garden is officially planted and growing strong.
70 hills of Lagenaria siceraria hard-shell gourds, approximately 125 plants in the ground, irrigation is up, and everything is rolling right along. We’re excited for another growing season, and so far, the weather is on our side. Here’s to a great year ahead!

Tomorrow is the big day! 🌱

All 136 gourds (17 trays of 8), growing happily in their 6-inch pots, are finally headed for the field.

We started these plants on April 24 and probably got a little ahead of ourselves. The goal is always to plant in late May, but this spring stayed cooler than we’d like. Rather than rush them into cold soil, we decided to keep them in the warmth of the pallet greenhouse until nighttime temperatures consistently stayed above 50°F.

Before planting, we’re giving them a little exposure to the wind. They’ve been pretty spoiled in the greenhouse, and a little breeze will help them build some strength before facing the bumps and challenges of life out in the field.

I’d rather wait a little longer and have them hit the ground running than plant too early and watch them sit cold, stunted, and slow to grow for weeks.

Tomorrow, they finally get their chance.

Happy Spring! 🎃🌱

Happy Pride Month! 💜💙💚💛🧡♥️

The gourds are getting almost “too big”. They’re starting to grow tendrils already! 🌱
We’re getting them in the ground Tuesday evening (6/3). Weather looks solid after that 🤞
Started from seed on 4/24… it’s always a gamble on those start dates.
Don’t fall down yet, little gourds. Stay standing!

This is a gourd hoarder’s dream. 🌱😂

Hundreds of beautiful, hard-shell gourds, all grown here at home and finally cleaned, dried, and squeaky clean after 13 months of growing and waiting. Seeing them all together like this is honestly pretty incredible.

We do sell locally here on our farm in New Gloucester, Maine - by appointment. Right now we do not ship and we do not sell in bulk. Even 900 gourds goes surprisingly fast between art, birdhouses, workshops, local sales, and all the creative people who turn them into something amazing.

We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who supports what we do and for all the creative people who give these gourds a second life. We can’t wait to see what this year’s harvest becomes. 🌱

I hired a salesperson to help me sell my gourd plants and I think he regrets accepting the position. 🌱😂

“It’s a great day to clean gourds…”

Nope. Cleaning gourds still sucks.

But this is the fastest, cleanest way to do it, and before anybody says I’m wasting water: I’m standing over a dug well, so the water literally filters back into the same water table.

I’m basically just borrowing the same water dinosaurs drank.

One of the greatest allies a garden can have is birds.

Here in Maine, this eastern bluebird pair is raising their young beside the garden, spending every hour hunting insects to feed hungry chicks. Cucumber beetles, caterpillars, small wasps, and countless other pests become part of the natural cycle.

Long before modern pesticides, Indigenous peoples and early farmers understood the importance of working with nature instead of against it. Encouraging birds near growing spaces has been part of natural pest management for generations.

A single nesting pair of bluebirds can remove thousands of insects in one season, all while raising the next generation only a few feet away.

To me, birdhouses are more than decoration. They’re an invitation to restore balance back to the garden.
