What a productive and fun busy family weekend! Saturday we had enjoyed a great playdate with some new friends and then after I made a batch of mozzarella & a batch of ricotta to bring over and make lasagna for my (Riss's) father-in-law's birthday!
What an absolute treasure to make the meal from mostly our products! (Y'all I used packaged noodles. This lady only has so much capacity and time πŸ˜‚) I was so overjoyed that everybody asked for seconds, we all ate so much πŸ™ŒπŸ»
Sunday was a hearty farm work day, we picked up a load of hay and while getting situated to load it into the hay room - we let the herd out to the front yard to graze and browse. Well sassy miss Gingersnap decided that instead of grazing on natural snacks she was going to jump onto the table stand at the gate & open up NOT ONLY my container of triscuit crackers, she decided she was also going to pop open my lemon dill hummus that I just opened the night before πŸ‘€πŸ˜‚ Needless to say, I ran and grabbed the package from her and then belly laughed till we couldn't breath because her lips and nose we're covered in the evidence 🀣 Cheers to farmlife - the good, the hard and always the silly!!

Milk lips and silliness 🍼 These two buck brothers are adorable. They have solid confirmation and I like how their briskets are looking. They seek out attention and have lovely personalities, it won't be long now till they are seeking 🏑's. I can't believe they are 7 weeks old now!

Started the morning at -18 just after 7am. Mom and I are troopers when it comes to dealing with harsh weather. That being said, I'll admit I'm quite ready for this negative temperature spell to be through!
Some say on the evening of January 31st Brigid passes by, as she does, she warms the ground readying it for the season to come. Where her feet touch the Earth, wildflowers bloom first. Light a candle tonight to inspire her walk. πŸ•―οΈ
We are at the threshold between winter & spring where the darkness still holds a strong grip and underneath the stirrings begin. Notice the chickadees calls, the evergreens color a strong second to the white snow. The sun blinding and fierce, awakening the sleepy ground below.

Gave the barn a good strip out yesterday and refreshed everywhere with a hefty amount of pelletized bedding, straw and shavings. The does and mama's are enjoying warm water buckets twice a day during the negative temps, probiotic treats with their free choice minerals, & alfalfa with nightly grain and forage. Everyone is content and cozy despite the cold, cold weather.
Looking forward to the official kick off of our Kid Cuddle visits tomorrow!

Come meet the babies! We will be holding our first Kid Cuddles event of the year this weekend, Sunday February 1st with two cuddle times from 10-11am and 11-12am

DM us to reserve your spot!

Come celebrate Imbolc, the Midway point between winter solstice and spring equinox. From here on the light gets brighter, the ground starts to soften, the Earth warms & wildflowers spring up.

Introducing Gandalf and Merlin πŸͺ„Miss Magic was the fourth and final kidding of the day on Saturday the 11th.
She gave birth to a buckling and a doe! The buckling looks like the spitting image of mama and he couldn't be any cuter, his sister's pretty darn tooting. Adorable though! As I write this, her and her little ones are exploring the front yard jumping and bouncing away. Not everyone likes to have kiddings in January, but we'll take babies frolicking in the fresh snow all day long! They make getting to spring that much easier! ✨

Thank you to everyone that dropped off their Christmas tree this season!
All the goats got to enjoy several trees at each barn with the bonus of several lovely visits from the kind folks that brought them.
Evergreens are a part of a goats natural diet. The pine needles contain vitamin C, manganese, antioxidants and apparently they taste delicious πŸ˜„
Enjoy some adorable & silly photos of the herd snacking away on their assorted tree snacks!

Keep an eye out for events to come, we will be posting goat kid cuddle sessions super soon!

The Story of Two Moms

Saturday at promptly 2:00pm Our registered first freshener Took a Leap La Rochelle started her journey into motherhood with vigor. Once labor started it was clear she was not comfortable, this indicated the baby was likely in an undesirable position. We were correct. Her contractions were coming fast and hard and a head came forth, immediately bad. Tried to push the kid back in (as trained) and no luck, the feet were tucked under the chest and not able to be reached.
So I made the call to a very knowledgeable friend, no less than Sarah Blackstone at , Who by the grace of fate was only 15 minutes away, with help! At the point they arrived, the head was delivered outside of the canal and Rochelle was getting more desperate. Sarah gloved up and internally assessed. We were going to have to pull the kid and do what needed to be done to save at least mom if not both of them. So we got to it.
1 minute went by. Then 3 minutes.
Then Star of my Moon screamed from the nearby stall, she was ready to push her kids out!
Barb hustles to her while Sarah, Hailey, I (Riss), and new friend Emma, attend Rochelle.
5 minutes go by. Then 10.
Every concerning thought and motivational speech was going on in my mind.
Star delivers two kids back to back like butter, 1D 1B. Barb stands up to check in and locks eyes, struck with fear, I'm fighting my own internal worry of what's to come.
15 minutes.
We brace, hard, Sarah pulling babe and me holding Rochelle firm and steady, and we pull the kid into this world. We all scream with joy and relief for Rochelle. Immediately unsure of state of life we take our places caring for our charges.
One second later Star births a third doe, as I have the questioning thought to do so, Sarah tells Mom to pass her that fresh baby, and we graft her, because without knowing Sarah and I both think Rochelle's baby is gone.
18 minutes has elapsed now.
Rochelle gathers herself and accepts her "baby" right away. The moment she starts licking her Hailey shouts, he has a heart beat!
20 minutes, we all breathe.
YOU GUYS HE LIVED. HE'S ALIVE AND THRIVING.

Aaand BLINK - They're hereeeee! We kicked off the 2026 kidding season with a whopping 4 Mama's going into labor on the same day. πŸ‘€πŸ€―πŸ˜† We welcomed 8 new babies onto the farm today! Yes it was a lot! Thankfully all but one of these moms are fully seasoned and know how to have babies very well. πŸ‘ŒπŸ» The fourth first season freshener, well, she had it rough. She's okay despite a very hard birth, and so is her baby (definitely going to make a separate post on her and baby in a few days because phewww) Now all Mom's are tucked in with their little ones resting peacefully for the night πŸ₯°

Shown above is beautiful Samoa with her two perfect silver bucklings. 🀍

Boop the snoots! Their fuzzy little muzzles will always be in my top 2 favorite physical parts of the body, can you guess what the other is?!
When Misfits Haven Farm began, we started out with a horse and a goat, so needless to say touching soft muzzles is engrained in every fiber of our beings! Whether it was the calm, warm breath of the soft skin on a horse's muzzle, the eager hot breath pants of a labrador retriever (or the thousands of other dogs we took care of over the years at pooch!), these goats have such a delightful combination of those feelings ❀️
