Flower Spotlight ✨ Bearded Iris

These old-fashioned favorites are making their annual appearance! Like so many of spring’s finest, the bearded iris is a once-and-done flower. It comes into bloom mid-spring, does its thing for a couple of weeks, then fades away until next year.

While these darling little “pass-along” flowers grace many home gardens, you very rarely find them in a grocery store bouquet because the blooms are incredibly fragile. Full of ruffles and delicately scented, a bouquet of iris’ is so simple, yet irresistibly romantic. Available only from your local flower farmer 😘

Mother’s Day means different things to different people—and the great thing about flowers is that they can say so much.

Bouquets are a little more extravagant than usual to celebrate this special weekend, filled with lush spring favorites like tulips and ranunculus, plus bupleurum, statice, and snapdragons. Lots of pinks, oranges, yellows and lavenders...a perfect palette for this time of year.

The father-son duo behind Ash Outdoor knows that maintaining a functional and beautiful outdoor space in an environment impacted by the ocean’s salty breeze is no easy task. But all up and down Long Beach Island, we see evidence of their hard work.

Check out page 32 of Bay Magazine’s summer issue to learn how they keep backyards thriving.

I’m sure there were a lot of grumbles this morning, as we climbed out of bed to a blanket of frost, yet again. But perhaps we could alter our perspective and feel thankful that spring encourages us to embrace a more drawn-out transition.

Let us not forget that warm weather brings an inherent energy, an often-exhausting pace of life. As spring comes to us in fits and spurts, may we heed the lesson from Mother Nature. As humans, we, too, need space between times.

Mirroring the patterns of spring, we can learn to give ourselves this grace. Nature teaches us that change of never random; the natural world is highly ordered. We are going somewhere. What a gift to *s l o w l y* reorient as we emerge from a season of restoration, heading toward a state of full flourishing. ✨

Flower Spotlight ✨ Gay Tabor Narcissus
Most people would guess this pretty little lady is a rose, rather than a daffodil! Lush layers of ivory petals reveal creamy orange frills at the center of each bloom, and the gently sweet floral notes are absolutely perfection.

It was an honor to work with The Nature Conservancy in helping to spread the word about their important partnership with Monmouth University. It’s amazing just how much life our humble salt marshes support—including three shark species!

“As the ocean throws its icy water into the bitter wind, we instinctually seek out ways to stay toasty and pass the time until summer’s welcome weather returns.

Two staple locales, one on the island and one just over the causeway bridge, kick it up a notch with the cozy factor to warm us up from the inside out.”
