Seems like spotted cucumber beetles and earwigs are visiting the dahlias in droves lately!

Though it’s tedious, taking time to cover the buds with organza bags is totally worth it. Even just a few tiny nibbles makes these beautiful blooms unusable.

You will find lots of dahlias in bouquets this coming weekend!

Have you ever had a bouquet with one of these little guys in it? Go ahead, look at the picture again…I’ll wait.

Little piggybackers like this are truly a good sign! They are an invitation to bury your nose in a bouquet and breathe deeply; a symbol to invite your children or grandchildren to help you arrange the flowers in a vase; a reminder that these blooms—a gift from nature—are something you can completely welcome into your home. Why??

At Leepa Farm, we don’t use any pesticides or herbicides to grow our flowers. We rely on beneficial insects and good old hand-picking to keep the bugs in check. This is not at all how large-scale, imported flowers are grown, so seeing a creepy-crawly on your bouquet can catch you off guard.

Simply pluck it off or give it a little flick into the grass for the birds, and go on enjoying your fresh, local flowers. And as always, thank you so very much for supporting our little family farm!

While I am certainly not going to utter the f - - - word (the one that rhymes with ball), the sight of the sun a bit lower in the sky, the sound of the nighttime crickets, and the occasional flock of geese flying overhead all tell us that summer is winding down, whether we like it or not.

This transitional time—as kids go back to school, as routines change—can feel chaotic as we regain our footing.

A fresh bouquet of flowers is a great way to anchor your days. It serves as a beautiful reminder to take a deep breath, savor the small moments, and give ourselves some grace as we follow nature’s lead to a new season.

Flower Highlight ✨ Sunflowers

These happy flowers are a classic symbol of summer. They are one of those blooms that can totally hold their own as a straight bunch, but they also offer that oft-needed pop in a mixed bouquet.

I usually grow them a little on the smaller side so they don’t overwhelm the other flowers. And in so many different shades, you just can’t go wrong.

Fun Fact: these are the only flower I plant every week or two all summer long
