Petrichor Farm

Petrichor Farm A small scale sustainable farm renewing a connection to our land by renewing a connection to our community. It’s not like selling shoes.

Petrichor Farm is about nourishing our community through accessible, affordable organic foods: a local response to a global issue. It is an agricultural enterprise that seeks to educate through our actions and be an example of sustainability, empathy and compassion. We strive to exceed organic standards by paying careful attention to the health of our soil, for it is the imperative foundation whic

h nutrition and well-being rest upon. We will bring fresh, local food to area restaurants, including a variety of microgreens, culinary herbs, eggs and in the future, pork. We exist to provide a nutritious local alternative to our surrounding communities thus pushing forward the local food movement. We believe, wholeheartedly, that the failing health, both physical and mental, of our nation is an epidemic that can be cured educating people about their food sources and allowing them access to healthier choices. We exist with the hope of being part of the change necessary to feed our community and help it grow stronger and healthier. In addition to being a bastion for nourishing bodies, Petrichor Farm also wishes to nourish hearts. We see all people as having value, and strive to remind those who have forgotten what their value is. We welcome the underdogs, the forgotten, the down trodden to participate in the daily cycle of the farm in hopes that reconnecting with nature, as well as one another, will remind them of their worth. Developing a farm model is as individual as taste in music or fashion. Petrichor has developed our plan based around experience, interest, and desire to offer a variety of goods and services that is manageable for one person. Help will always be welcome and sought after in the form of interns and volunteers, but the reality is, there will be times when no help is available, so it must be handled singularly. Every element of this plan revolves around living organisms, which lends a certain level of unpredictability to potential profits and losses. Shoes are shoes weather it rains or not. Shoes don’t fall ill or get ravaged by migratory pests. That is the beauty, and adversely the curse of agriculture. There must be adaptation and fluidity on the part of the farmer in order to make a farm work. There must be keen observation of the immediate surroundings of the farm and all it’s organisms, from the soil in which we grow, to the plants and animals that live upon it. It takes heart, determination, the acceptance of failure and the courage to try again. It takes someone that can endure nature's cruelty and find a way to persevere. Petrichor wishes to represent the resilience and fortitude necessary for all life.

When Mark and I first met and I learned he was the drummer for Bury Your Dead, I didn't quite understand what that meant. And then he introduced me to his music, and honestly, I still didn't understand. I respected it and admired the adventures it awarded him. I was awed by his ability, but beyond that, I didn't get it. It was a little too aggressive for my tender sensibilities. But... I get it now. Last night, I had the privilege to sit on stage and watch this band end it's 24 year run. It was crowded with mommas, wives, kiddos, friends and former band mates, all of us cheering them on. The music was loud and charged, and the fans were rabid in the best possible way. But as I watched in the hours leading up to the end, that's when I finally saw the bigger picture. I got to meet all these guys, their wives and families, friends and fans, and they were ALL AMAZING people. These guys were more than band mates. They were brothers, bonded by the shared experience of having their wildest dreams come true. Their families, friends and fans were the backbone that gave them all the courage, permission and encouragement to go out into the world and grab it by the balls. And their gratitude for ALL of it was palpable. They were humble. They were kind. They were infectious. I've always been a fan of Mark, but maybe not entirely so of his music. That all changed last night when I got to experience just a little of what he has for all these years. It was about the people all along. The music is incidental . These guys were what brought it to life and made everyone that showed up there last night, and all those other nights over the last 24 years feel alive. It's a special kind of magic they possess. Most of us only get the chance to admire it, but they LIVED it. What an adventure! I'm so proud of Mark and his band of brothers for what they've accomplished. They've changed lives by touching them with words and chords and shared experiences. They gave their blood, sweat and tears to chase down dreams. If that ain't a life well lived, I don't know what is. What a way to bring down the curtain. I may be late to the party, but I am a fan! ❤️

How big do you think this tree is? Well...I'll tell you...
I just went to bring the girls in for dinner. They spend the day either out in their field enjoying the tall grasses and mud pit, or, if the sun gets too hot, they retreat to the shade of the forest to snack on acorns. They have almost 2 acres of land fenced off that's all theirs to enjoy, and they'd never dream of trying to escape. So, imagine my surprise when I couldn't find them anywhere. How do you misplace 1600 lbs of pig? I checked the field. Not there. I checked the forest. Not there. My brain itched trying to solve this puzzle. Maybe the grass is tall enough in the field that it hides them laying in it? No. Maybe they hopped over the fence to explore. Extra no! They aren't equipped with hoppin' parts. Back to the field, back to the forest, back to the field, hoping they'd magically appear. Maybe someone stole them? All they'd need is some donuts and a trailer. I failed to teach my girls about stranger danger because, well, they're pigs. I could feel the panic setting in. It never even occurred to me to call to them. They always come to my high pitched "Pig pig pig". I ran back to the forest and tried. In less than 1/16th of a second, two 800lb bodies that had been dead asleep side by side behind this tree that is, you guessed it, big enough to conceal two 800lb bodies, shot up with a trademark "SNOOOOORRRRRGGGGGG" and shot like lightning straight at me. As I've said before, NEVER startle a prey animal bigger than you, let alone two that can come at you from different directions simultaneously at the speed of a runaway freight train. Luckily, I have learned that my 47 year old frame is far more athletic than I had given it credit for. Before I had a chance to know what was happening, I was leaping over two warp speed ham trucks, narrowly escaping what surely could have been my demise. And now that we've all gotten our cardio in for the day, Ray, Gash and I are going to go relax away the elevated heart rates. 🥴

Twit (former house chicken) is by far the best little Momma this farm has ever seen. Today was the first outing for her 9 lil' bebes, and she taught them ALL the things! Her vocalizations in the video were a lesson in dust bathing in perfectly fluent fowl language. Ah...they grow up so quick. *sniff*🥹
