I always like to post a good bye tribute to horses who have retired with me. I grow to love all of them as if they were my own and, for most of them, their passing was after a long life of love and many adventures, and several years of just being a horse with lots of horsey friends. So passing may be sad, but it is a part of the rhythm of life.

But sometimes it’s just unfair and tragic, as it is with precious Otis, who left us much too soon.

Rest in power Otis (Dark Star) 2021-2026. 💔

A beautiful, true black warmblood baby with a puppy dog personality. Loved so much by his owners, imbued with so much hope for an exciting future. But health issues forced his retirement before he could truly show his potential.

Despite this, we hoped he’d have many retired years to enjoy his friends and charm all the humans. But sadly he let us know it was time to leave. His mom bravely made the hardest yet kindest decision.

Fly free Otis! You earned your wings! Thank you for gracing us with your life, however short. You made a big impression on all who met you!

Sept 2: UPDATE ON HUNTER:
We met with the surgeon on Tuesday to see if Hunter would be a candidate for amputation. Amputation wouldn’t save his life, but it could help prolong it and would help manage his pain.

The surgeon at Vet Specialists in West Hartford was awesome! Dr Carrao. Because he’s in good shape generally and his other three legs are strong, she felt he was a good candidate.

But, they always do chest X-rays prior to surgery to determine if the cancer has spread. That’s the go/no go decision point. So we did the X-rays and unfortunately they showed he already has nodules in his lungs.

So we’ve switched to pain management. He’s been on carprofen and gabapentin since last week and that’s helped him a great deal. He’s eating and engaging again.

I also have codeine for extra relief when needed.

Next step is a IV pain med given once every 28 days that is specially for bone cancer. So we’ve signed up for that!

One thing I am very grateful for is that Hunter has pet insurance from Trupanion. Without hesitation I can say yes to everything he needs!

Aug 26: Sad news to report. Our best boy Hunter has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer).

We have some more vet consultations scheduled next week to determine next steps, but our options are limited. He’s at least 12 and a half, so there’s that.

For now, we’re trying to manage his pain. This came on very suddenly a few weeks ago, when he started favoring his hind leg. I’m very grateful he hasn’t suffered a long, long time. But all he knows is that he hurts. 💔

For now, we just love him and give lots of cookies.

Working on some upgrades! New gates in the upper field in the stallion alley (the pathway between the two fields; if needed we can open the opposing gates across the alley and create one big field).

And new mats in the upper south shed. The old mats are about 15 years old and their interlocking tabs and surfaces have degraded over time. Pressure from the four-legged rototillers and the drag of the Kubota tires have pulled them apart. The question was, what’s the best way to fix?
Option 1, take them all out, dig out the footing and replace with new footing and new mats? Or option 2, just take them out, flatten the surface and put the old back in?
Or…met a new mat supplier at the Equine Affaire who sells enormous, heavy duty, interlocking mats that could be cut to exactly fit the shed. And then flatten the old mats and install the new mats over the top?
Bingo! Option three!

New mats are from LRP mats in Ohio. The eight new mats are 6x11 each to fit a 22x24 space. They cut them to exactly fit the space and delivered the mats rolled up.

It took about 6 hours to clean up and flatten the existing mats and install the new.

Really happy with the results!

We have a few more sheds to fix, but we’re going to give these a little time to settle to see if we need to change anything in how we did the installation.

FYI we used self leveling cement to fill any holes in the old mats.

Welcome to Otis and Cody! Otis is a big, beautiful, true black Hanoverian, and Cody is an adorable Paint/QH cross. Big difference in their sizes (17h+ and 15h). They’ve both been here a little over a week and are becoming friends!
