Picanha is an awesome steak to try if you haven’t. It’s a popular cut from Brazil and known as a the queen of steaks. Here is a quick recipe from Jess Pryles with her recipe. If interested in that steak or trying any other Red Angus or Akaushi Wagyu steak or Heritage Berkshire pork we have you covered.

Well you could go to Costco and spend $5/lb and have to do all the processing yourself or you could support a local cattle operation and purchase a beef and have it fully processed and packaged for about the same price per pound from our operation. You can get a 1/2 beef for $5.25 will all the processing and packaging included and it all stays local and supports family operations around you!

While it’s not a new tractor or even newer than the 6330 JD we traded for it. We’re excited to have our replacement 7410 JD that has the 6 cyl diesel vs the 4 cyl and doesn’t have all the electronics and other “modern” amenities. We were looking for something that has the hp but also more mechanical and has better hardware than the plastics that were on the 6330. Time to get to work haying soon.

Ever wonder what Silvopasture is and how it works. That might be a farming technique you’ve heard of but not sure what it looks like in practice. This past weekend my family and I planted about about 150 trees over 30 acres on our cattle operation. It included Swamp White Oaks, 4 varieties of Pecans, Butternuts, Shellbark Hickories and Poplar trees. We even installed drip irrigation lines so that we can water the trees anytime we need during their establishment phase over the next 3 years.

We planted these trees in 5 rows spaced anout every 200 ft. And the trees within a row were spaced every 25 ft. The Poplar trees alternated with the hardwood trees to give a 50 ft spacing between them when the hardwoods are mature. The Poplar trees will provide quick shade for our livestock while the hardwoods get established. Poplar trees can grow very rapidly puting on 6ft of growth in a year Then in about 8-10 years we will remove the Poplars to give the hardwoods more room to grow.

We covered the trees with a tree guard to keep the deer and other wildlife as well as the cattel from damaging or killing the trees while they take root. they will emerge form the top of the guard in a couple of years when we can then remove them. This will also ensure that their lowest branches will be about 6 ft above the ground.

This will not only enhance our family cattle operation, but also the wildlife and the environoment by slowing the wind, providing shade and habitat for birds and insects and small mammals, a source of food from the different nut trees, and enhance the water and soil of this property too all the while improving the farm and cattle welfare.

All this is to help provide shade to the cattle keeping them cooler and having better gains or keep condition better, keep the cool season grasses cooler as well keeping them productive longer into the summer when they typically enter what is known as as “summer slump” due to high temperatures in Missouri, and finally maybe even provide some additional income from the lumber or nuts many years into the future. A win-win-win.

This past weekend we had our annual hog butcher where we process our family’s yearly pork. We cut out our different cuts like chops, hams & pork steaks as well as making sausages & brats & curing bacons & jowls. We get to talk about life events, Remember years past, spend time with family think about old family recipes and pass something on that we received as kids to the next generation. It’s one of my favorite farm traditions! I hope things like this stay in our family for more generations to come.

Was a great day spending time with my dad and life long best friend Jason Green . We spent Saturday building fence for our rotational grazing system and the EQIP program for these acres. Could ask for better men to share the day with!
