As we continue trying to feed animals on the surface of the sun, here’s some reminders for managing animals in the heat:

1. CLEAN water buckets. Clean enough to look new. Refilled and/or topped off multiple times per day. Water sitting out is like bath water even in the shade in these temps.
2. Grass hay and haygrazer will produce less heat in digestion than alfalfa.
3. Fresh air flow. Stagnant, ammonia filled air causes respiratory illness. Keep fresh air moving through the barn with fans. If possible put them in front of an evaporative cooler of some kind. (Remember to add bleach or vinegar to prevent mold). If they are outside make sure they have plenty of shade with airflow, a hut isn’t sufficient bc there isn’t airflow inside the hut.
4. Do not work them in the heat unless you have a cool place to do so.
5. Focus on health and keeping them on feed more so than growth right now. Growth will come in healthy goats when it cools off. Focus on health first.
