The berries are coming in hot and fast now! We'll be open 4 days a week with new hours for the next month while the berries are in season. Please note that we will be taking a mid-day break for a couple hours on Saturdays.

For U-pick, we have loads of blueberries, red currants, and black currants. We also have somewhat limited amounts of gooeseberries and red raspberries.

From mid-July, a lot of berries will finish up and we'll return to a more limited schedule.

We hope you get to come enjoy our berries this Summer!

It's funny when we first brought the chickens home a month ago, they really didn't know how to walk on the grass, scratch, or forage. We had to lure them out of the coop with grain on the steps. Now, they run straight to the compost piles for worms and bugs as soon as they're moved to a new spot. Love seeing them learn how to be chickens!

The number one reason people fail to grow blueberries is not adjusting soil pH.

Blueberries need soil pH of 4.5 - 5.5 in order to uptake nutrients they need and fruit well. Pine needles and used coffee grounds are not enough to lower your soil pH to that level. If you're planting in a container, you can mix lots of peat moss in the potting soil. If you plant them in the ground, sprinkle organic soil acidifier (sulfur) around the plants once a year to get the right pH level. Sending a soil sample to Penn State extension to get the exact pH level of your soil can be very helpful to know how much sulfur you need to add.

Guess what else thrives in acidic soil and gives us delicious fruit? Cranberries! Low-growing cranberries are groundcover plants. We're testing out this blueberry & cramberry combo in a used whiskey barrel. The cranbberries should eventually fill up the barrel and drape nicely over the sides.

Come check out today to ask us your blueberry and cranberry questions šŸ˜€ We're open from 9am - 4pm!

Native meadow in the making! Now that we don't have a reason to keep this wide patch of pasture for sheep anymore, we are turning it into a native meadow.

We lightly tilled the area, and covered with silage tarp (weighted down with compost) to kill off the existing grass. We'll come back in June and uncover the tarp to let the seedbank geeminate and cover it again to kill the new seedlings. And we'll repeat it a couple more times until we seed this area with meadow mix in late fall. This process gives a huge head start for the meadow plants to establish without too much competition with other plants.

We are envisioning a meadow with a walking path and a seating area inside it šŸŒ¼ā‡ļø

We've been busy planting lots of new currant cultivars, blueberries, gooseberry, and goumis in new rows and between the hazelnuts! The cool weather has also made planting and mulching much more pleasant.

Annual heavy mulching with aborist woodchips in the berry groves and orchards builds good soil, retains moisture for the plants, and suppresses weeds. This prevents the need for irrigation. We never mix the woodchips into the soil to prevent nitrogen depletion, which many people worry about with mulching. Mulch is simply applied on top of the soil around the plants.

We love mulching here at Hundred Fruit Farm!
