Is your pond experiencing a fish kill this spring? This year has had favorable conditions for Columnaris (bacteria Flavobacterium columnare) outbreaks.

Above normal ice out temperatures followed by extreme rainfalls and flooding introduces high levels of organic matter, which provides a nutrient-rich environment for the bacteria to thrive.

These two environmental factors, as well as, fish spawning creates an overly stressful environment for fish, lowering their immune system and allowing this bacterial infection to persist, ultimately killing fish
