PSA: Please do not put out dog feed for our livestock guardian dog.

Pictured is feed that was poured out from people other than myself for Bear.

I am on the job site every evening, overnight, and into the morning. The goats, Bear, and I all have our routines. These routines include feeding Bear, and he gets a specific feed that he is used to having every day. Our goats do not need additional feed outside of the brush they are clearing and the mineral I provide for them.

Providing additional feed for animals you don’t know (especially working animals) can often be more harmful than good. Some of our goats are dairy goats, and one of them is currently being milked daily, and any extra feed (including dog food that isn’t eaten by Bear) can impact her milk production. Goats in general have sensitive stomachs as well, and excess uneaten feed is feed they could find themselves eating.

You also don’t know if any of these animals have allergies or specific diets that need to be maintained for their own health and safety.

While I appreciate the thoughts and concerns, they are not necessary.

Bear is also a working livestock guardian dog. Trying to interact with him or the herd he is guarding can also be dangerous to you if he were to perceive you as a threat to the herd.

For the safety of all involved parties, please do not interact with our animals in any way, shape, or form.

Happy birthday to Merry and Pippin! These two were some of the first goats born at Bales Goats five years ago! They both still stick right with their dam, Scampers.

Wish we had taken some before pictures, but here is what the job site looked like behind the Weigel’s on Chapman Highway after the goats finished up.

The goats have now headed to Jefferson City for a small job and should be available again once that job wraps up around the end of this week or beginning of next week. If you’d like to get on the schedule, get in touch with us on here or find our phone number in our bio!

GOATS really are the G.O.A.T

I spend a lot of time with goats. Taking care of them and watching them every day has caused me to notice some interesting parallels to our own lives.

Each day I feed them grain. There is a feed pan for every goat in the pen. I start on one side and move across the pen, putting grain in each pan as I go.

Watching the goats during feeding time is interesting.

Some goats fight over a pan that is already occupied.
Some follow me around, constantly chasing the next pan instead of eating the one I already filled.
Some are too timid to put their head in a pan because they are afraid another goat will push them away.

And some simply pick a pan and eat.

The ones that look the healthiest β€” in goat terms, the fat and shiny ones β€” are usually the goats that just pick a pan and eat. They consistently end up with a full belly.

Over time I have realized these goats have been teaching me a few lessons.

First, contention wastes energy. There is enough feed for everyone, but the goats that fight spend more time pushing and less time eating. In the end they often get less.

Second, constantly chasing the next thing can leave us empty. Some goats keep running from pan to pan, never settling long enough to eat what is already available.

Third, confidence matters. The goats that do the best are the ones that simply step in and eat (go to work).

And finally, consistency is powerful.

Small things done every day add up to big results. The goats that eat a steady amount each day stay healthy and strong. Too little and they become thin and sick. For them too much grain can cause problems. For us, overconsumption can lead to waste and imbalance.

Consistency really is the compound interest of life.

My takeaway from feeding these silly goats is simple: focus on the important things and do them consistently.

Scriptures, prayer, family, and saving a little money.
Nothing dramatic β€” just steady effort day after day.

I know this is easier said than done. I hope these goats have not wasted their life lessons on me.
If you want to learn from them let me know and you can take a turn doing chores. πŸ˜‰
