Marley, meet KitKat.
KitKat, protect baby.
Baby, meet Benny. 🥰

This is our first year having a creep panel from the start, and I’m already a big fan.

Our mamas are lambing together vs being separated and sometimes ewes get pushy. The baby’s know where to go to be safe, and I have a warm mat for them to snuggle on! (Often next to the barn cat, Sugar)

Mamas can fit just their heads in too when they need to check on them. It’s perfect.

2 more mamas to go!

Our Easter began in the very early morning hours welcoming the sweetest pair of brothers. I went from panic to immense gratitude over what I thought would be a rough delivery and DOA lamb. But we got it just in time!

Mama is quite spicy, but she’s a fantastic mother and they are healthy as can be. What a blessing new life is on this day!

Happy Easter, He has risen!

Bad weather, but easy birth and a healthy ram and mama?! I’ll take it!

Echo, our inquisitive indoor rabbit, overheard a blizzard is coming. In her excitement, she started practicing making snowballs.

How Moose feels about this snow forecast 😝

Not looking forward to winter returning this weekend!! As usual the total estimations are all over the place, but it seems to be somewhere between 12”-24” in our area with quite a bit of wind…

Knowing that we did most of our prep yesterday around here with the weather being decent. That looked like bringing in extra hay, bedding everyone down with fresh straw, picked up feed from the mill and having the vet swing out and do some assessments. Today we will make sure the humans also have the appropriate amount of food stocked, clean and dry winter gear and I have a list of documentaries/movies I want to watch to distract myself from the outdoor frozen nightmare 🫣

The good news, next week another round of spring returns! Thankfully !

Farmer or not.. what do you do to prepare for a winter storm?

Fact: We love our smiley sheep ☺️

This particular ram lamb, is out of a particular ewe, who is especially friendly! You may recall pretty black sheep in our farm photos a few falls ago, named Missy! She’s my girl.

Every year, Missy, without fail gives us the best temperament babies. Most question if they are bottle fed, but it’s quite the opposite. They are dam raised for closer to 12 weeks as long as she looks good, and babies simply mimic her sweetness without us working with them much. I have kept one of her ewes (who can’t breed) specifically to help tone down the craziness that some of our ewes have. The more calm they are, the easier it is to care for them, and easier for their new homes to handle them too.

Plus the more smiley sheep I have, the happier I am. So it’s a win-win!

We took advantage of fake spring and did some maintenance around the farm before the threat of snow and freezing temps bless us again…

One of those things was refilling our mineral buffet from Little Avalon Farm. We purchased it last year when we seemed to be battling one thing after the other with our sheeps health, and wanted to provide them with more mineral options to prevent deficiencies. Apparently they were low for a little too long yesterday day, as they beat each other away to be the first in line 😬

It’s sort of amazing to watch them sniff out what they need or don’t need, including copper. If you don’t know copper is very toxic to sheep, however still needed in low doses which is why having it separate in a buffet style works for them. It also makes it easier if you run goats with your sheep, as they need much more!

Makes me wish I could do that, crave only healthy foods with nutrients that my body needs, instead I reach for excessive amounts of caffeine and a nightly dose of Kwik Trip ice cream 🥴 that’s healthy right? RIGHT..!?!

I’m going to pretend it is 🫣

One of my favorite pieces of equipment that I never thought I needed!

Weighs everything from lambs to calves, children and fat farm dogs! 😂

Weight tells you so much about how your livestock are thriving or failing, and handy for times when you need to treat for illness.

Is a scale something you need/want on your farm? Let us know in the comments!
