I am looking to hire, but I have a very specific person I have in mind.

My crew at Zweber Farms, LLC is really good. I just need a couple shifts filled on a regular basis. I am looking for someone who can work either Fridays or Saturdays from 3:30-8pm and one floating shift a week either 3:30-8 or 5-8 or the full 3:30-8pm. For the fall, most likely that weekday shift will be on Tuesday or Thursday. Both my kids are running cross country this fall and I want to be able to attend a few of the meets. There is opportunity to pick up more shifts when people are on vacation and over the summer months.

The job is half feeding calves and half milking cows. Once trained, calf chores is independent work. Milking is always two people, typically with me, my father in law, or one of my lead milkers.

Job qualifications:
*Must be at least 15 years old
*Must have reliable transportation
*Must be eligible to work in Minnesota
*Must be able to lift 40 pounds
*Must be able to walk and stand the entire shift
*Must be willing to work in all weather
*Must CARE

The last point is the most important. I can teach you everything on this job, but I cannot teach you to care. Care about doing a job well. Care about the health and wellbeing of animals. You must care. This is a job caring for living things and producing a product (milk) that people will drink.

Wage: negotiable and based on how quickly you can become trusted to work independently. There are no benefits besides a fridge full of snacks, extra clothing, time off when needed, ability to pet baby animals every day, and a friendly work team.

Happy Father’s Day to Chad, our red angus bull.

Since we believe most of our heifers are pregnant, he hasn’t had to work much lately. He got the job done in a timely manner.

Chad will be the father of most of our beef calves that will be born starting in August through next summer. Unfortunately, he will be an absentee dad and returning to his original farm in a couple weeks.

We are looking for a new red or black angus bull for fall breeding if anyone has one for sale or rent.

Maple sleeping on the job.

Maple might be a hardworking puppy, learning so many new things, but she still gets plenty of rest.

We are working on having her settle in many places on the farm, even around commotion.

She has mastered sleeping in the machine shop, next to the milking parlor, in our garage, in the barn office (how is it comfortable sleeping like that), on the Kubota seat, and so many other places.

Work hard, play hard, sleep hard.

Today was our USDA organic certification inspection. This is an annual inspection and it can happen anytime of the year. We never know but a few days in advance.

Tim takes on the majority of organic paperwork and meets with the inspector. The inspection is part paperwork, part visual inspection. The paperwork part just finished. It took them four hours.

Now, Tim and the inspector will inspect all the dairy cattle, our feed storage, and fields. This can be another two to three hours.

Essentially USDA organic means: no GMOs, no antibiotics, no synthetic hormones, and no synthetic chemicals on our fields. It also means that our cows need to eat at least 30% of their feed from pasture and be on pasture for at least 120 days in a year. Since we are grassfed, we have to meet the additional standard of 50% of feed from pasture and a 150 days in a year.

Only our dairy is organic. While we raise our beef with our dairy animals and raise our pigs and chickens close to organic standards, we don’t certify them organic. This would mean more paperwork and more cost to you.

Maple on the job.

Tonight, Maple helped me send cows out to pasture. Maple wasn’t “working.” She was simply following the cows with me. I had her in a relaxed heel (which she is still learning).

I want her to be comfortable following cows without pressure on the cows. It will be awhile before we teach herding commands.

Maple on the job, day 7.

Today, Maple was practicing riding on our side by side. We use the UTV to bring cattle in from pasture. We also use it to do all our poultry chores. I want Maple to enjoy UTV rides and also learn to stay on the UTV until released.

No issues today. It’s hot. 87°F. All Maple wanted to do was escape the sun.

Same girl same.

Has anyone used one of those leashes for car rides that clips into the seatbelt clip? I’m thinking I want something to keep her on the seat if I jump out and she decides the follow without being released. I want her in a safe spot.

Day four of Maple on the job.

Today, she practiced hanging out in the milking parlor pit with us. This isn’t an easy task. The milking parlor system is loud and there are cows coming and going. Maple needs to learn to be calm and quiet around the cows.

After about 30-45 minutes of redirecting her to her crate to calm, the whining stopped and she just napped the rest of milking. This will get better and better each day.
