Our family farm is located just south of Minneapolis and St. Paul right off of I-35 and twenty minutes from the Mall of America. Our family farm was founded by John J. Zweber in 1906.Today, the farm is owned by John's grandson Jon and his wife Lisa in partnership with their son Tim and his wife Emily. We raise sustainably raised grass fed beef, pork, pasture chickens, and free range eggs. Our mission is to provide your family wholesome, fresh and great tasting meat. You never have to worry about what you fed your family when you purchase from us. We sell direct from our farm and straight to your family's table. If you are interested in ordering meat from us, please give us a call at 952-461-3428 or via email at [email protected]. We will walk you through the entire process and answer all your questions. When you come to our farm to purchase, you will be able to meet with us, tour our farm and see the animals. Check out our website for ordering details. Currently, we have one pound packages of pasture raised ground beef and pasture whole frozen chickens available all year. We also have custom orders of beef and pork packages. We often have a waiting list (because we really do have great tasting meats).

Today we are hosting a group of University of Minnesota Twin Cities students. They are in a sustainability class and are using our farm as a case study. We have been hosting this class for a number of years and it is a lot of fun.

These students typically don’t have an agricultural background, so a brief overview and tour of a dairy farm sets us up for bigger discussions.

Then we get into the hard hitting sustainability questions.

Sustainability means different things to different people. I think every farm has a goal of sustainability, but that looks different on every farm too.

What questions about sustainability do you have for our farm? I’ll follow up with a post answering these questions.

Picture of chicory flowering in our pastures. One key component of our sustainability view is to grow food for cows that is diverse. This helps with the complexity of both soil nutrition and animal nutrition needs.

Plus chicory is pretty. A pretty farm is more enjoyable to work and and that helps with mental health sustainability too. 🥰

Hello Fall!
Welcome in fall by filling your freezer with delicious Zweber Farms pork.

Fall is my favorite season and with it comes some of my favorite foods. Foods that are heartier, filling and warm up the house while they cook. Pork is my go-to protein for fall. I am truly blessed that I can walk through my garage and pick out anything I am in the mood for from our store. Savory pork chops, sticky ribs, juicy pork roasts, or smoky bacon, they are all there.

You can have this luxury too by ordering a half or whole hog from us. We have pigs available all fall, but you will need to act fast because we always sell out. When you order a half or whole hog from us you can have it cut however you would like. Lisa makes the process painless by walking you through the choices.

We had twins born today and I was trying to think of 1906 popular names that paired well together.

I told Tim I was going to name them Betsy and Tacy. He had no idea what I was referencing.

I should take away his Minnesota card.

Please tell me someone loved these books as much as I did as a kid.

I reserved the first book for him on Libby. It’s a four week wait. I have the set on our bookshelf if he has time to read a physical book. Who knew the books were still popular. Sweet books about best friends set in Minnesota from late 1800’s to early 1900’s.

I haven’t posted a Maple update in awhile.

She is growing, chewing on EVERYTHING, learning obedience commands, and hang out with me every chance she can.

Her favorite thing is to ride in vehicles. My SUV, the tractor, the skid steer, and her favorite the UTV, she loves to jump up on the seats and go for a ride. She loves riding with me to feed calves, to feed chickens and to check on the cows. She makes sure I am safe too by always keeping one paw on my leg. Safety first!

I am looking to hire, but I have a very specific person I have in mind.

My crew at Zweber Farms, LLC is really good. I just need a couple shifts filled on a regular basis. I am looking for someone who can work either Fridays or Saturdays from 3:30-8pm and one floating shift a week either 3:30-8 or 5-8 or the full 3:30-8pm. For the fall, most likely that weekday shift will be on Tuesday or Thursday. Both my kids are running cross country this fall and I want to be able to attend a few of the meets. There is opportunity to pick up more shifts when people are on vacation and over the summer months.

The job is half feeding calves and half milking cows. Once trained, calf chores is independent work. Milking is always two people, typically with me, my father in law, or one of my lead milkers.

Job qualifications:
*Must be at least 15 years old
*Must have reliable transportation
*Must be eligible to work in Minnesota
*Must be able to lift 40 pounds
*Must be able to walk and stand the entire shift
*Must be willing to work in all weather
*Must CARE

The last point is the most important. I can teach you everything on this job, but I cannot teach you to care. Care about doing a job well. Care about the health and wellbeing of animals. You must care. This is a job caring for living things and producing a product (milk) that people will drink.

Wage: negotiable and based on how quickly you can become trusted to work independently. There are no benefits besides a fridge full of snacks, extra clothing, time off when needed, ability to pet baby animals every day, and a friendly work team.

Happy Father’s Day to Chad, our red angus bull.

Since we believe most of our heifers are pregnant, he hasn’t had to work much lately. He got the job done in a timely manner.

Chad will be the father of most of our beef calves that will be born starting in August through next summer. Unfortunately, he will be an absentee dad and returning to his original farm in a couple weeks.

We are looking for a new red or black angus bull for fall breeding if anyone has one for sale or rent.

Maple sleeping on the job.

Maple might be a hardworking puppy, learning so many new things, but she still gets plenty of rest.

We are working on having her settle in many places on the farm, even around commotion.

She has mastered sleeping in the machine shop, next to the milking parlor, in our garage, in the barn office (how is it comfortable sleeping like that), on the Kubota seat, and so many other places.

Work hard, play hard, sleep hard.
