Every September the industry toasts “America’s spirit.” Almost nobody toasts the enslaved and freed Black distillers who actually built it — the ones who read the barrel and made the whiskey while someone else signed the label.

I’m a Black woman with a PhD in ecology and a supertaster’s palate, and New Dawn is my reclamation of that seat. This month I’m pouring our 6-Year cask strength bourbon in their honor. 🥃

This month's pull is Justice. ⚖️

The scale in one hand, the sword in the other, the charge is simple: uphold what's right, and give credit where it's due. It's Bourbon Heritage Month, and Justice asks the honest question: whose heritage built "America's spirit"? The enslaved and freed Black distillers whose palates made the whiskey — and whose names never made the label. New Dawn is the reckoning: a brand reclaiming a seat in an industry we helped build.

To soften the blow of truth, meet the Garden of Good and Evil: New Dawn Bourbon at the center — cask strength, additive-free, nothing to hide behind — with crème de violette, a cut of lemon, Earl Grey bitters, a shimmer of gold, and sparkling wine to lift it. Good and evil in one glass, held in balance.

Sip with purpose.

"You keep asking the intellect to solve a matter of the spirit. The ancestors are trying to get your attention."

Nia was considering leaving a safe career for something completely unknown. Aunt Clara didn't offer advice. She poured a glass of New Dawn 6-Year Cask Strength Bourbon, arranged three tarot cards — The Empress, The Wheel of Fortune, The Strength — and connected Nia's modern crisis to her grandmother Hattie's legacy.

"Practicality is a tool, not a value. Hattie didn't have a blueprint. She had conviction."

"But what if I fail?"

"Failure is not the opposite of success, Nia. It's part of the cycle. Like this whiskey — it's been patient for years, waiting for the perfect moment to be shared. Six years of patience in charred oak. Someone decided to wait, long before they knew what they were waiting for. That's conviction."

This August, as summer closes, honor the ancestors who gave you more than a name. Find the elder in your family who holds the ancestral guidance. Pour a glass. Ask: "Tell me more about the signs that guided you."

He spilled coffee on her white blouse at a quarterly tax seminar. She married him anyway.

It was a mandatory continuing education seminar on quarterly tax filing. David was late. The coffee was hot. The joke he attempted in the aftermath was, in Lisa's words, "the most convoluted, truly awful joke I had ever heard in my life."

She laughed. They skipped the rest of the seminar. Three hours in the lobby, talking about everything but taxes.

"When I realized she was the only person who could laugh at the bad jokes and still make me want to tell her the good stories — I knew."

Their first shared whiskey was cheap. Honest. Their New Dawn 6-Year is the grown-up version: patient, complex, sweet — built for the connection that was worth the wait.

Six years in charred oak. Vanilla, cherry, a mellow warmth that earns its depth slowly. The taste of knowing exactly who you're with.

This summer, skip the small talk. Pour two glasses. Ask: "Tell me more."

This flower has a history 🐝

There's a moment in an August garden, just after the heat breaks, when the bee balm is the loudest thing out there — not to your ears, but to everything with wings.

Bee balm — wild bergamot — is a native perennial that feeds bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, with a bright minty-citrus flavor built for the glass. It carries history, too: colonists brewed it as "Oswego tea" after the Boston Tea Party. A plant that's always belonged to this land's table. 🌿

So I named the drink for it. The Oswego Tea Sipper: here we use bee balm twice, once as a tea steeped from those scarlet flowers and second in a honey syrup from its own leaves, a splash of lemon and our 10-year wheated whiskey — soft, layered, aged a decade in the Catskills. It’s a drink that can’t help but stir up the memories and get people talking. That's the whole point.

The S.S. Pallet floated for exactly three minutes before leaving everyone stranded in waist-deep mud with a bunch of terrified frogs. 🐸
Every family has a legend like this. The story that gets louder every year. The one where someone eventually asks "wait — was that actually legal?"

Cousins Marcus, Layla, Kevin, and Sam cracked open the New Dawn 6-Year on the porch at sunset and unlocked a vault: the ambitious raft built from shipping pallets and a stolen beach towel mast. The time capsule buried under the hollow oak (Sam contributed a half-eaten lollipop, "for DNA evidence"). The Fourth of July water balloon ambush that left Uncle Robert's convertible looking like it survived a tropical monsoon.

"He knew a successful operation when he saw one."

Our 6-Year Cask Strength Bourbon — cherry, chocolate, mellow warmth — was built for exactly these conversations. Some stories only unlock when the moment is right and the pour is good.

This summer, when someone starts a sentence with "remember that one summer..." — lean in. Tell me more.
