Nola To-Go

Nola To-Go Ever since the pandemic, my husband and I started doing a lot more togo/ restaurant pickup orders. Here are some photos and reviews for fun.

I started taking a photo of myself with the bag to let him know I had secured the food and was in route to home.

Hope you had a great pi day!

A new spot we’ve recently discovered in Metarie! I’ve been walking here every morning and have been really impressed by every doughnut! I’m not a huge doughnut fan, but I love doughnut shops. They’re always welcoming, inexpensive, and have a great group of regulars that sip coffee. Bakers Dozen is no exception. We have loved the glazed, Boston crème, maple and basically every doughnut ordered. Bakers Dozen

It’s been a while and my husband had another surgery and long hospital stay so we’ve been doing a lot of takeout and have had some amazing foods cooked by our good friends through a Meal Train! Here’s a few pictures of some of the delicious meals!

La Boulangerie on Magazine Street- Brett and I discovered this place a few years ago and immediately fell in love. I have a soft spot for places that have stuff in cases you can point at and they warm up for you in minutes. (Even better if they have tongs and you help yourself to them!) This is the perfect place to grab an already prepared picnic and head to Audubon Park. I haven't had a single thing here that isn't good, but here are a few of our favorites: the Le Parisien (Ham, salted butter, comte cheese & cute baby cucumber pickles on a delicious baguette), the Croque Monsieur, the potato salad, and chocolate crossiants.

I haven’t done as much ordering out, so I thought I’d share a little about what’s cooking in my kitchen. This is one of my favorite recipes from Recipe Tin Eats. It’s under $10 to make and is ready jn under 30 minutes; basically as long as it takes to make rice. I chop and clean cabbage, onions and carrots and sometimes cucumber if I’m feeling zealous. Put it in a little num choc sauce (vinegar, fish sauce, brown sugar, water and chili crisp) and caramelize the pork and assemble. https://www.recipetineats.com/vietnamese-caramelised-pork-bowls/ -watch

It’s been a while! Melba’s is around the corner from me. Over the years I’ve seen this place transform more than almost any other place I’ve frequented. Everytime I enter, there’s something different, but what remains the same is an unapologetic New Orleans spirit. This place has a hot food bar where you can hit all the New Orleans classics at once: red beans and rice, jambalaya, turkey legs, green beans and cabbage, and bread pudding. You can also get a frozen daiquiri, do your laundry, and drum roll… buy an award winning book! They have an incredible literacy program where they bring authors and sell the books at a low cost with an offer of free drinks, sides, etc. while their prices have increased with the times and I don’t frequent this place as much as I used to, I love it with all my heart. Eat, pray love at Melba’s! Melba's Restaurant

Guilty confession- whenever I'm at the mall I indulge in a cup of pretzels and a lemonade from Auntie Ann's Pretzels. If you are shopping this holiday season and need a little pick-me-up, I recommend the mini pretzel dogs or the original mini pretzel nuggets and a small lemonade. I like the honey mustard sauce because the cheese sketches me out a little. But you're buying pretzels from the mall, so live it up! Do you! But be sure to load up on napkins because the oils and salts on your fingers make your future gifts a little less glamorous when you've picked them up with your pretzel fingers.

Green Tea Restaurant on Clairborne and Napoleon- this is not the best restaurant in the city by any means, but what I do like about this place is that they have Chinese American staple entree plates like general tso’s, orange chicken, Szechuan, etc and you can choose a side like rice or lo mein and soup instead of an egg roll. You can also choose a spring roll or crab rangoons. The chicken noodle soup is delicious and I highly recommend ordering from there just for that. The chicken on a stick and boba tea and smoothies are also good. A fun addition to their menu is their little snack area. You can pick up a bag of chips, ice cream, or candy for late night snacking and movie nights after your takeout dinner, and something about that makes it a five star recommendation from me!

It’s been a while! I’ve got some more togo recommendations for you though! Gus’s Fried Chicken in Metaire. The fried chicken is spicy, perfectly breaded, and frankly, is top 5 best chicken in Greater New Orleans. Plus I love that they sell “little snacks” which include a 2 piece of chicken with a slice of bread. Collard greens, Coleslaw and baked beans are also good. Highly recommend!

I’ve been doing a little more cooking at home, but tonight while cleaning I stuffed a paper takeout menu in my basket of menus, and thought I’d share my menu collection with y’all. In a world of contactless Uber and Door dash deliveries and never needing to interact with the staff, building or feel of a restaurant, I love paper menus. I still almost always call a restaurant to place an order, and I love pulling out my collection when we want to place an order. We thumb through the options like an old telephone book- and on some, I’ve even stared our favorite items or wrote notes on the side. It might be nostalgic, but it feels good and I’m proud of my little collection.

Sammy’s Food Service and Deli on Elysian Fields- Sammy’s is one of my go to places for club sandwiches (a secret favorite of mine!). But y’all! The specials and the side dishes here are what should not be missed. They have incredible specials including, ribs, white beans and pork chops, chicken salads, homemade soups, grilled cat fish, Cajun pasta- and anything else you can dream up. The specials list is usually 7 or 10 items, and I’ve never been disappointed by anything that has come from this kitchen. What I love about Sammy’s is that it feels like you just went to someone’s house for lunch or dinner. The portions are great, the prices are reasonable and it’s always done in less than 20 minutes. https://sammysfood.com

Angelo Brocatos- this is the most AMAZING little dessert shop in New Orleans. It’s an institution and has been here since 1905. It has the best cannolis that I’ve found stateside. They hand fill them to order with half chocolate, half vanilla. They also have gelato, baked Alaska and tons of other treats. We recommend the cannolis, the coconut macaroons, the baked Alaska and the creole cream cheese gelato. It’s a very cute date spot, a place to stop on a hot Sunday afternoon, and the absolute best togo experience, because they put things in little boxes with string. Every time Brett comes home from a trip I get a little box of cookies from here. A New Orleans institution that is a must visit for locals and visitors.
