In 2019 we started our herd with a bred cow and two bred heifers. Eli was right around two years old and my first goal was to introduce livestock early so he wasn’t scared of them. That fall, he fell in love with his first bull calf, Diesel. He would go out and give him hugs any chance he got. Fast forward to this week, and I happened to catch him out giving hugs and loving on his new favorite bull calf, Inferno. I could help but think about that little boy all those years ago! We currently have 27 head of cattle with 12 more calves on the way between now and January. A lot has changed in the last 6 years, but Eli’s love for cattle has only grown with him.

Phoenix has long been Eli’s favorite and best friend! They started working together when he was just 5. He worked her most every day, fed before school, and took her to jackpot shows! Even after her show retirement, he would still make sure to give her all the love in the pasture! Unfortunately, she struggled to settle a calf through AI, but being the favorite we kept trying! When we bought a bull in November of 2024 she was the first one to settle a calf! Sunday morning she delivered a healthy bull calf all on her own. She has been a fantastic mother and allows the boys to love all over her little guy.

Eli has asked me every day if he can show him as a steer. I told him if we were going to show him, he needed a cool name. Since the phoenix rises from the ashes we went with Inferno! We will see how long Eli sticks with the idea of showing him, but this is the most interest he’s ever shown in a bull calf. I can’t wait to watch these two grow up together like he did starting out with Phoenix.

I’ve learned that social media storytelling is much more difficult than I anticipated. I thought it would be manageable to make a post or two a week, but in reality life is just hectic and that is an easy item to cut out. Now here we are halfway through summer already! The herd is growing and loving their time on grass. We have a busy fall calving to prepare for and can’t wait to see the herd double over a few months. County fair has come and gone and state fair is just around the corner. Earlier this year we had intended to go to Hereford Junior Nationals, but different circumstances led us to decide to wait until next year! Praying for safety for all the families and fellow breeders headed to Louisville! Hopefully we can make it down for a day to watch! Meanwhile, Eli continues to prepare for state fair open show just 20 days away!!

Today we welcomed the Creekbend Hereford expansion pack! We love our Hereford cattle and are so excited to welcome this group of Hereford piglets. With the desire to offer local raised and grown products from our farm to our community, we felt pork was the next best step! The boys, especially Judah, are excited for another adventure! We look forward to watching this group grow and creating more memories!

On February 3rd we welcomed a new heifer to the herd! After a challenging start with her momma, she has really started to pack on some pounds, and they have enjoyed time outside of the barn these last couple of days!

It’s sometimes a challenge to think of names, but Eli and I finally landed on a name today…Journey!

It’s been a journey…this year we embark on our 6th year raising registered Hereford cattle! We’ve learned a lot of lessons and are making strides to improve our herd genetics! Princess, the dam of this calf, was purchased in the fall from Ramsey Herefords. We are incredibly thankful for the friendship and guidance that Ray and Allison have offered to us, and we are grateful for this opportunity to grow our herd with this pair. We’re excited to watch her grow and watch Eli and her work in the ring this fall!

It was a bitter cold morning, but Eli did a great job exhibiting his heifers in the breed drive! He showed Storm by himself and had some help from a friend with Elsa, since she can be pushy sometimes. Proud of how he handled himself in the ring! Hopefully this show helped prepare the heifers for Beef Congress next weekend with Hailey!

It was a cold, snowy day for Eli to make his first trip around the ring for this season! We are so proud of how far he has come in the last few weeks getting more confident walking his heifers. He chose to take Storm in for showmanship today and they worked well together! She doesn’t always like to get her feet set for him, but he has more control with her and that’s what mattered today. We will brace for a bitter cold heifer drive tomorrow and look forward to watching Eli’s confidence soar!
