This is frost damage
On April 20th the entire region experienced a historically cold night. Temperatures on our farm dropped to 21° for a sustained 5+ hour period, effectively killing 75% of our fruit buds and blossoms. Among the surviving apples many are showing scars from the cold. You can clearly see where the frost settled on the top of the newly-formed apple buds and damaged the cells. The brown "frost ring" is coarse and tough, kinda like sandpaper. These apples will be used for making c***r or discarded entirely.
