Sunday question for the keepers ❄️

Cold nights are on the way, so this week we want to see your winter setups. Straw bales on the windy side, clear plastic over part of the run, and deep bedding are three cheap upgrades a lot of keepers swear by.

Fall rain has a sneaky way of turning the dust bath into a mud pit. 🌧️

Dust bathing is how chickens keep their feathers clean and keep mites and lice down, so it's worth keeping a dry spot going all winter. An old tire, a kiddie pool, or a shallow box works great. Fill it with dry dirt and some sand, then park it somewhere with a roof over it (under the coop or a covered corner of the run). Top it off with fresh dry dirt whenever it gets packed down.

Frostbite on combs and wattles is a real cold-weather worry, especially for big-comb breeds and damp coops. Lots of keepers dab a thin layer of wax balm on combs and wattles before a hard freeze, and Musher's Secret is a classic one (its Amazon listing says it's safe to use on chickens).
