We've been upgrading our gardens this year and this is our in ground garden! We've been working in this soil for years and now we have built up a decent amount of rich, organic matter that's created a very good growing medium for just about anything we grow here.

We had to pull out all of the quack grass (aka twitch grass) and we brought in natural wood mulch for our walkways. The idea is to have carbon dominant walkways so we can pull weeds and put them in the paths for us to walk on and that adds nitrogen to break down and turn into compost. Every other year we will shovel these into the garden beds and replace the mulch. That means compost forever!

Look out for the onions and carrots that will go to market from these beds this fall ☺️

Mother’s Day Raised Bed Garden Install complete ✅

These 4x4 cedar post hugelkultur beds should last 15 years. We lay aged hardwood logs on the bottom, lay in hot organic chicken manure, then mix aged softwood mulch and then a raised bed mix from coast of Maine. The wood is loaded with mycelium and mychorizae and should release nutrients over many years while also acting as a water storage bank. These are so fun and produce so much food!
