My mom found out she was pregnant with me while she was still in high school. The man who got her pregnant disappeared the very day she told him—no calls, no support, no presence at all.
She missed her prom. She swapped sparkly dresses for diapers and late-night shifts. She studied for her GED while I slept beside her.
So when my own prom came around this year, I told her:
“Mom… you missed your prom because of me. Come to mine—with me.”
She laughed at first. Then she cried so hard she had to sit down. My stepdad, Mike, was thrilled.
My stepsister, Brianna?
She almost choked on her Starbucks.
“You’re taking YOUR MOM to PROM? That’s… honestly pathetic.”
I didn’t respond.
Later, she went again.
“Seriously, what’s she even going to wear? One of her church dresses? You’re going to totally EMBARRASS yourself.”
Still ignored her.
Prom day arrived—and my mom looked incredible.
A soft blue gown. Vintage curls. A smile that lit up her entire face.
She whispered, “What if people stare? What if I ruin your night?”
“Mom, you BUILT my life. You can’t ruin anything.”
We reached the school courtyard for photos.
That’s when Brianna strutted over in a glittery dress that probably cost more than my car. She pointed at my mom and said loudly:
“Why is SHE here? Is this prom or Bring-Your-Parent-to-School Day? How EMBARRASSING.”
Her friends laughed.
My mom’s smile disappeared.
Anger surged through me.
But what Brianna didn’t expect was her dad—Mike—stepping forward.
When he heard her words, he approached slowly, deliberately, and did something I will remember for the rest of my life.
“Brianna. Sit.” ⬇️
