Wine and Unwind is a Harlem based wine store focused on providing the community with access to wine from the world’s classic Old World and New World regions as well as emerging wine regions. We focus on family-owned, sustainably farmed, wineries that produce expressive, tasty, wines. We want our customers to enjoy wine that highlights the attributes of its varietal(s), wine making style, and terro

ir. Ultimately, we believe enjoying wine comes down to three main themes:

Learn: The wine world can feel immense and is constantly evolving with new wine regions being explored and cultivated every year and local, esoteric, varietals being showcased for their unique attributes. This can feel intimidating, but once you learn the fundamentals this immense world will become more tangible and familiar. When enjoying wine, take a moment to learn something new about the wine, such as the region or appellation it calls home or how its varietal's unique characteristics are showcased. You will quickly start to pick up trends and better appreciate the wines you have always enjoyed! Pour: Drink lots of wine! The best way to learn about wine is to taste wine. You can read about a bottle of wine and learn about the region, varietal(s) and wine maker’s style, but you will not truly grasp the wine until you taste it. Therefore, aim to constantly try new wines and develop a palate for the different regions, varietal(s) and styles. You will naturally find wines that you enjoy more than others, but always appreciate the wine for its attributes even though you may not prefer those attributes. Couple this with what you have learned and you will become a wine expert in no time! Share: Easily the most important theme. Wine is best enjoyed when shared! Pour your family and friends a glass of wine and share what you have learned with them. Then, enjoy the wine and the company. Wine simply tastes better when shared with family and friends. Most lean towards reds during winter months, but white wine can be equally enjoyable. Reach for white wines with a more plush and creamy mouthfeel to conjure those warm feelings. We have a fantastic selection of winter-friendly whites. We also have summer go-to whites in case you’d like to reminisce about warmer days.

Winemaker Joey Tensley adores Syrah. Of the Santa Barbara vineyards he harvests, the fruit from Colson Canyon vineyard is consistently impeccable. The eight-acre vineyard is located 1,400 feet above sea level and uniquely contains iron and calcareous-rock rich soil. The vines bake in the afternoon sun and benefit from the vineyard’s cool ocean breeze. These hot and cold influences allow the Syrah grapes to mature longer on the vine, yielding ripe, dense, concentrate fruit. This is the only wine Joey Tensley ages in some new French oak as the wine’s focus and vigor is soften by and integrates with the oak. The result: a wine that can be enjoyed young with all its vivacity or can be aged for 10 to 20 years, transforming its bright blue fruit notes to stewed fruit notes and allowing its leathery, earthy, and secondary flavors to surface. The 2019 Tensely Wine Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah is a truly remarkable wine!

Joey Tensley launched Tensley Wines in 1998 with one goal in mind: craft superb Syrah-focused wines that highlight Santa Barbara County’s terroir. Through much grit and diligent work, he found early success with his 2001 vintage. Two of Tensley Wine’s 2001 Syrah reds were ranked in the Wine Spectator Top Ten Wines in the World and Robert Parker scored all of the 2001 wines in the high 90s. Joey Tensley would continue to craft superb age-worthy wines that overdeliver on price. More recently, he built on this price-to-value theme by launching Fundamental Wines in 2017. These are crowd-pleasing wines you can enjoy daily.

The 2019 Fundamental Red Blend is made up of 50% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 12% Mourvedre, and 3% Viognier. Each varietal plays an integral role in the overall wine. The sum is greater than the parts. Syrah is the backbone, adding weight, blue and black fruit notes, and pleasant tannins. Grenache adds red flower as well as red fruit notes plus lifted, snappy acidity. Mourvedre brings a touch of earthy and savory flavors, while the Viognier softens the wine with floral aromatics and shy stone fruit notes. Balanced and pure, the 2019 Fundamental Red Blend showcases Joey Tensley’s winemaking skill and desire to consistently overdeliver.

Happy Holidays! To celebrate the last month of 2021, we have curated a lovely Wine Club Selection. This month’s theme revolves around my favorite varietal: Syrah! We included two expressions from Saint Joseph and a South African Syrah dominant blend. What’s more, we included a delicious South African winter-friendly white.
