What Happens When You Mix Milk and Coca-Cola?
Mixing milk and Coca-Cola can produce a strange separation effect, with the drink developing floating particles and a sandy-looking layer at the bottom. While viral posts sometimes claim the reaction creates something toxic, that's not what is happening.
Coca-Cola is acidic, partly because it contains phosphoric acid. Milk contains proteins, especially casein, that remain stable under near-neutral conditions. When the acidic soda lowers the milk's pH, the casein proteins can clump together and separate from the liquid, creating curd-like particles that eventually settle.
It's essentially a simple example of protein coagulation caused by acidity, similar in principle to what happens when milk is exposed to other acidic ingredients. The mixture may look unpleasant, but the visual reaction itself isn't evidence that the two ingredients become poisonous.
