What Happens When You Mix Milk and Coca-Cola?

Mixing milk and Coca-Cola can produce a strange separation effect, with the drink developing floating particles and a sandy-looking layer at the bottom. While viral posts sometimes claim the reaction creates something toxic, that's not what is happening.

Coca-Cola is acidic, partly because it contains phosphoric acid. Milk contains proteins, especially casein, that remain stable under near-neutral conditions.
