Earlier this year, our Ecological Horticulturist, Laurie McDowell, was named the 2026 recipient of the Steve Kemp Writer's Residency offered by Smokies Life, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the scientific, historical, and interpretive activities of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Laurie will spend six weeks at Great Smoky Mountains National Park this year to learn about the Smokies' natural and cultural history and render that experience in two mediums: poetry and illustration! His residency will be divided into three two-week segments where he will focus on wildflowers in the spring, meadow blooms and leafy trees in the summer, and a vibrant transformation in the fall.

Laurie has been working at the Randall's Island Park Alliance since January of 2025! He often represents the Horticulture team at key events, such as our Earth Day, Waterfront, and Harvest Festivals, and has even become a park favorite at Big Truck Day, where he mans the water truck. Swipe through this post to see him in action, as well as some of his poetry and illustrations.

Dear Friends of Randall’s Island Park,

Happy Juneteenth! We hope today, and this weekend, are full of reflection, family time, and relaxation. Randall’s Island Park is the perfect place to do just that this weekend! Explore our serene gardens, have fun at Scylla Playground, or rest in our picnic areas.

A busy weekend is anticipated here at Randall’s Island Park, so be sure to:

- Dispose of charcoal in marked red coal bins.
- Keep all barbeques and flames away from trees.
- Follow all new traffic patterns.
- Note that due to the increase in visitors, certain parts of the park may close to vehicles – particularly Wards Meadow Loop. Please plan accordingly.

We wish you all a fun and safe weekend!

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance’s restored wetlands and shorelines provide critical foraging habitat for Black-crowned Night Herons and other harbor herons. Through RIPA’s Park-as-Lab program, we regularly monitor these birds on the Island, helping us better understand how wildlife uses restored urban habitat throughout New York Harbor.

That local connection makes new research from especially urgent. In a newly published, peer-reviewed article in Conservation Science and Practice, NYC Bird Alliance scientists found that Black-crowned Night Herons, historically the most abundant wading bird in the New York–New Jersey Harbor, have declined by 55% in just 22 years.

Without conservation action, they could disappear from NYC as soon as 2037.

NYC Bird Alliance is leading the call to protect this iconic harbor bird, and RIPA is proud to help share their work.

It was a gorgeous Saturday at Randall's Island Park today! 🌞🌽🦀

Visitors explored both our Little Hell Gate Salt Marsh and our Urban Farm throughout the day. Our Salt Marsh was equipped with park experts, fiddler crabs, shrimp, binoculars, educational materials, and more. Attendees explored the paths that are often closed to the public. At the Urban Farm, Chef Keesha prepared amazing Fennel & Corn Fritters with two seasonal sauces. She used ingredients like papalo, parsley, and garlic scapes! Swipe to the end for the recipe.

Our next Salt Marsh Saturday is on July 25, while the next Urban Farm Food Demo is on July 11. We hope to see you at the park, soon!
