Fill in the blank:

"They don't make __________ like they used to."

I'll go first: washing machines. My grandmother's lasted 30 years. Mine barely survived 5.

When was the last time you actually looked at your feet?

Most of us pay attention to our face, our hair, even our nails — but our feet get ignored until something hurts. And yet they're one of the body's best early warning systems.

The cracked heels one really surprised me. I always assumed it was just dry skin. But persistent deep cracks that don't respond to moisturizer can sometimes be an early sign of thyroid changes — something worth bringing up at your next checkup.

And those nighttime foot cramps? Before reaching for a painkiller, try a glass of water and a banana before bed. The magnesium and potassium combination solves it for most people.

Do your feet do any of these? Which one surprised you?

Hold your hands out in front of you, palms up. Now flip them over. What do you notice?

The one that surprised me most was the cold hands connection. If your hands are always cold — even when the room is warm — it's not just "bad circulation" like we've always been told. It could be Raynaud's syndrome, which is more common in women over 40 than most people realize.

And those cracking fingertips that seem to get worse every winter? Sometimes that's more than just dry air — it can be your body asking for more B vitamins.

Your hands spend the whole day right in front of you but most of us never really look at them. Do you notice any of these?

Name a TV show from your childhood that today's kids would never understand.

I'll go first: adjusting the rabbit ears antenna on the TV while someone yelled "STOP! Right there! That's perfect!" from the couch.

Look at the whites of your eyes in a mirror. What color are they?

Pure white is ideal. But if they've become slightly yellow, that can be an early warning sign from your liver. And that gray ring some of us develop around the colored part of our eye? After age 60 it's usually harmless — but in younger adults it can signal high cholesterol.

Your eyes are one of the only places in your body where blood vessels are directly visible without surgery. That's why a good eye doctor can sometimes spot health issues even before you feel symptoms.

When was your last eye exam? What did you notice when you looked just now?

What was the one meal your mother made that nobody else could ever get right?

Mine was her beef pot roast. I've tried the recipe a hundred times — same ingredients, same oven temperature, same Dutch oven — and it never tastes the same. Something about the way she made it just can't be replicated.

I think it's because she never actually measured anything. A "pinch" of this, a "handful" of that, and somehow it was perfect every single time.

Go look at your tongue in a mirror right now. I'll wait.

The color and coating of your tongue can reveal more about your health than most people realize. A healthy tongue is pink with a thin white coating. But if yours is bright red, it could mean you're low on vitamin B12 or iron — two deficiencies that are surprisingly common, especially after age 50.

A thick white coating can signal dehydration or a yeast overgrowth called oral thrush. And yellow? That often points to digestive issues or bacterial buildup.

The best time to check is first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything.

What color is yours right now? Did anything surprise you?

What did your family call this? Wrong answers only.
First comment (within 30 seconds):
In our house this was called "whatever mom had leftover from the week" and it was the best meal every single time.

My grandmother's kitchen had:
✓ An avocado green stove
✓ A rotary phone on the wall
✓ A cookie jar that was never empty
✓ A junk drawer full of mystery keys
✓ Handwritten recipes stained with cooking oil
✓ A smell that felt like home
How many can you check off? And what would you add to this list?

Name something that was in your grandmother's kitchen that you'll NEVER see in a kitchen today.
I'll go first: that wall-mounted phone with a cord long enough to stretch into the next room for privacy.
