It was bound to happen sooner or later….
Over the course of our life in Hell’s Kitchen as a community wine merchant, we (and I) have been invited to birthdays, bris’s, Easter and Christmas, New Year’s Eve (and Day), meeting parents and newborns and yes - a wedding. Celebrations of life, friends and families. But yesterday was a first, another celebration of life, the funeral of one of our oldest customers, Sophie Ge**er. Just shy of her 105th birthday, Sophie left us last week and was laid to rest yesterday. Her life was praised for its richness and her deep love for her children. The first member of her family to graduate from college, she had a professional career in pr and marketing as well as acting, singing and playing the piano. She performed well into her 90s and at the age of 102, wrote her own memoir, “The Trunk in the Attic; Memories and Musings of a 100 year old broad”. She survived cancer, heart disease and two cases of COVID and leaves behind two loving children. Her recipe for long life - “Find something to laugh about every day” which included sometimes laughing at herself.
We raise a glass to Sophie Ge**er - we will remember for the rest of our lives.
