This is a tasting that brings together some of the most compelling expressions of Italian terroir currently in the market. 🍷 National Pinot Day with André Hueston Mack and Maison Noir Wines 🍷
•
Few grapes reward honesty like Pinot Noir, and few producers have made Oregon Pinot Noir as welcoming and accessible as André Hueston Mack. Today we’re raising a glass to O.P.P. — “Other People’s Pinot,” a Willamette Valley selection made from grapes grown in some of the region’s finest vineyards across a range of appellations. This is classic Oregon Pinot Noir: aromatic, inviting, and true to its terroir. Accessible, but never simple.
Behind O.P.P. and Maison Noir Wines is one of the most compelling figures in American wine. André Hueston Mack left a career in finance to become a sommelier, went on to lead the wine programs at The French Laundry and Per Se, and in 2003 became the first African-American named Best Young Sommelier in America. He built Maison Noir Wines as the self-described “black sheep” of the industry — proof that a serious palate and an open door are not at odds. As André puts it: “You don’t have to wear an ascot to drink my wine.” ☑️
What makes André’s work with Oregon Pinot Noir special is exactly that sense of balance: a sommelier’s precision applied to wines meant to bring new people to the table, without sacrificing the sense of place that made the Willamette Valley famous.

Food & Wine has named two wines from the Banville portfolio among its “Six Top Italian Vermentinos to Seek Out Now” (Tom Hyland, Aug 2026).

🏝️From Sardinia → PALA Soprasole Vermentino di Sardegna 2025 “Invigorating sage, pear, and thyme aromas appear on the nose, while the palate exhibits excellent ripeness, beautiful varietal purity, and a lengthy finish. Enjoy with crab or most shellfish over the next 3–5 years.”

🌊From the Ligurian coast → Cantine Lunae Etichetta Nera 2025 “This Vermentino is quite rich, with aromas of honeysuckle and coriander. There’s great varietal purity, vibrant acidity, and outstanding persistence. It’s a hedonistic expression that is an ageworthy classic and should be at its peak in 7–10 years.”

As Diego Bosoni of Cantine Lunae describes it, Liguria has long offered Vermentino “an ideal habitat” , a mild climate, strong marine influence, and sun-exposed hillsides that give the wine its savory tension and unmistakable salinity.

💫Biancavigna was founded in 2004, but the family story begins much earlier, in 1903, with their grandfather Genesio and the historic vines he cultivated on the steep hills of Conegliano Valdobbiadene. For decades, the family focused on growing exceptional fruit before Elena and Enrico set out to bottle their own wines.

By combining Enrico’s winemaking expertise with Elena’s entrepreneurial vision, they built BiancaVigna as an estate devoted to its own sparkling wines. Today, every step of the process remains in their hands, from 30 hectares of vineyards to the finished wine, linking more than a century of family history with modern, environmentally conscious winemaking.

Earlier this month, Eric Guido of Vinous turned his attention to Campania in “Campania’s Reawakening: Beyond the Shadow of Taurasi,” highlighting the complexity of the Cilento region and particularly the distinctive wines of San Salvatore 1988. In this dramatic coastal landscape, vineyards rise quickly from the Mediterranean toward the Apennines: Aglianico grows at 210 meters in clay soils, while the Pian di Stio vineyard reaches 550 to 650 meters, producing an exceptionally mineral expression of Fiano.

One of the stars of Guido’s tasting was San Salvatore’s 2024 Fiano Pian di Stio:
⭐️94 points: “The 2024 Fiano Pian di Stio is perfumed and elegant, with a bouquet of wild flowers, lemon zest, crushed apples and spice. It’s texturally deep, silken and pliant, with deep minerality and a hint of raw almond to enrich its crisp white pit fruits. 📍 Cilento, Campania: Owned by Giuseppe Pagano, the estate is located in southern Campania, where coastal influences, mountainous elevations and varied soils shape its distinctive wines.

🦬 Integrated farming: A 550-head herd of water buffalo provides nutrient-rich organic manure for the vineyards, connecting the estate’s agricultural and viticultural activities.

♻️ Renewable energy and zero waste: A biodigester transforms buffalo manure, grape husks, fruit pulp, olive stones and other organic byproducts into natural fertilizer and approximately 1.8 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy each year.

☀️July gave us plenty of reasons to raise a glass. We spent sunny summer moments with Rose Gold, shared the wines of te Pā Family Vineyards from New Zealand, and caught up with friends and colleagues at the Crested Butte Food & Wine Festival.🏔️

In Chicago, a special dinner with Passopisciaro and Pala brought the wines of Sicily and Sardinia together around one table. It was a full and memorable month, made even better by the people, places and wines we were lucky enough to share along the way.🍷

✨ BiancaVigna DOCG Sui Lieviti
The heritage of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene hills, captured in the glass. In Biancavigna’s Sui Lieviti, the freshness and fruit of Glera meet the texture and structure that come from resting with the lees for an extended period of time. It is a direct expression of local tradition; a style long associated with these hills and carried forward today with greater precision in the cellar.

Each spring, the base wine is bottled for a second fermentation in bottle. The yeasts remain at the bottom, giving the wine its distinctive character and layered complexity.

Banville Division Manager Casey Squire captured a few snapshots from a memorable wine dinner in Chicago earlier this week, where guests journeyed through two of Italy’s most notable islands: from Sardinia’s windswept shores to the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna.

The evening brought together two producers from the Banville portfolio: PALA of Sardinia and Azienda Vitivinicola Passopisciaro of Etna, Sicily. This was a rare side-by-side exploration of two distinctive wine cultures and their indigenous grape varieties, paired with a menu inspired by the islands’ vibrant street food, fresh seafood, and treasured recipes.
