Last week, our beloved volunteer distributed 5 fresh vegetable parcels for 48 poor and displaced people in Al-Esteqama Camp, South Ga/za. Among those served, was a group of children without parents whose tragic loss was a heartbreak beyond compare. They are 10 orphans, 6 boys and 4 girls. Their father was shot dead trying to bring a kilo of flour to his family and mother was bombed in their family tent. The boy pictured here is Khaled, age 13, a courageous but shaken young man trying to survive daily the horrors of occupation.
Khaled and his brothers spend most of their day in streets begging. They come home exhausted, wearing old clothes, sitting in a torn tent, trying to keep themselves entertained away from tragic memories and inescapable circumstances. It is a pain so unbearable few could wish on their enemies. Khaled, like most Palestinian teens, is the embodiment of strength in a world forced into superhuman will on an hourly basis. These kids were not our customers, they were our hosts who invited us on a brief tour of courage in real time.
Our team encounters children like Khaled on a regular basis and there are many more stories like his. This is the tragic unbroken reality of life in Ga/za: loss, shock, anguish, despair, frailty, trauma, longing, and pain combined with fortitude, courage, love, faith, resilience, and hope. These are the kids that men have assigned not long for this world, yet are here still in any form possible. Pray for Khaled.
