Look who’s back! Our favorite well-priced, much loved Loire valley w**emakers Domaine des Sablonnettes! There soil reigns supreme and the name itself is a nod to the sandy ground beneath the w**emaker village of Bellevigne-en-Layon. Home to vines over 120 years old, the domaine saw its first vintage four generations ago at the hands of August Menard, the great-grandfather of current w**emaker Jérémy Menard. It was under the care of Jérémy’s parents Joël and Christine that the w**ery found its identity as Domaine des Sablonnettes, an organic, biodynamic estate.

New in! From Domaine Pignier in the Jura.

Two very different ways of expressing the region.

GPS 2023: a blend led by Chardonnay, Poulsard and Savagnin alongside notes of Acacia flowers, pear, peach kernel, and a saline finish. Fresh, generous, and distinctly Jura.

Chardonnay de la Reculée 2023: 100% Chardonnay from the old local Melon à Queue Rouge selection, grown on fossil-rich blue-black marl. White flowers, yellow fruit, subtle vanilla, and bright, crystalline acidity.

Domaine Pignier has been in the same family since 1794 and today farms its vineyards biodynamically.

Just in a small drop of some of the best Spatburgunder and Chardonnay from Germany just arrived.
We always love having Wasenhaus at the shop.

“Alex Götze and Christoph Wolber, two Germans, were bitten by the same Burgundy-bug and ended up meeting each other in Beaune, both on their own w**e-pilgrimage. Alex was born and raised in the area of Dresden and came to w**e through architecture. Christoph was raised in Baden and a bottle of Burgundy was so compelling that he ended up just jumping on his motorcycle and heading west.

Over a period of nearly a decade, both garnered pretty serious Burgundian credentials, working at Comte Armand, Bernard van Berg, Leflaive, de Montille, Pierre Morey and Domaine de la Vougeraie. Alex, in fact, was the vineyard manager for de Montille until 2021.

As for the w**es, the measured introduction would be something like: these are among the most talked-about w**es in Germany and they deserve this status. Honestly, I’ve had few people taste these w**es and not have an eyebrow raise or a jaw drop. They are not only that good, but they are that obviously good.

Similar to Enderle & Moll, the Wasenhaus Pinot Noirs show an uncommon lightness and clarity; a finesse that embarrasses most other German Pinot Noirs. While Enderle & Moll tends to present more structured, a bit more tense and wild, the Wasenhaus w**es are ultra-fine, with a textural elegance that is second to none. If Enderle & Moll is punk rock; Wasenhaus is chamber music or jazz (?) – one isn’t better than the other, but they are very different.

While the Pinot Noirs are showstoppers, the Chardonnays compelling, the Weissburgunders, for me at least, are revelatory.“

It’s that time of year again!! SIX different cuvees from crowd favorites Marie and Vincent Tricot have just landed at the shop. For some quick context:

Born in Anjou, Vincent left the Loire and attended Oenology School in Beaujolais in the early 1990’s. After graduating he stayed in the region and apprenticed in Brouilly from w**emaker Patrick Coton. Around this time he met Marcel Lapierre and several other w**emakers who were beginning to attract attention to their non-interventionist style of w**emaking. Vincent was moved by their w**es and quickly decided that this was the path for him.

In 2002, after travelling the world, he moved with his wife and their 2 daughters to the village of Orcet in Auvergne. They purchased 4.5 ha of organic vines and planted an additional 6 ha. Vincent had learned that the region had one of the largest concentrations of pre-phylloxera vines in France and was eager for such a rare opportunity to work with them.

In 2003 the family produced their first cuvee in “Les Marcottes” without any added sulphur and have continued that approach for all of the w**es.

* Désiré 2025 — 100% Aligoté, with fresh white peach, bright acidity, and a saline edge; direct-pressed, spontaneously fermented, and aged in tank.
* Les Milans 2025 — Pinot Noir, Gamay d’Auvergne, and Syrah show smoky red fruit, violet, and spice; the varieties are vinified separately with a mix of whole bunches and destemming, then aged in barrel and stoneware.
* Les Petites Fleurs 2025 — 100% Gamay d’Auvergne, bursting with ripe red fruit, smoky-saline character, and juicy freshness; made with an 8-day whole-cluster maceration and native fermentation.
* MC 2025 — 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Pineau d’Aunis, bright and mouthwatering with juicy red fruit and peppery spice; fermented with whole bunches for about six days and best served with a slight chill.
* Rosé 2025 — 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Gamay d’Auvergne, with savory herbal notes and plush, sherbet-like fruit; lightly macerated Pinot is blended with direct-pressed Gamay and aged in old barrels and stoneware.
* White Light 2025 — 40% Chardonnay, 40% Muscat, 20% Aligote showing floral aromatics, peachy fruit, and lemon

We have one of the best spreads of French w**e we’ve had in a while in the shop now. It’s one of our favorite things to stock (obviously), and there are so many worlds to explore within this one small country... Our selections range from classic to new school, from clean to funky, from everyday drinking to special occasion bottles. All natural, all delicious. Here are 4 of our favorites that we have in right now:

Don’t be fooled by this fun and cute label, this w**e has some heavy skill behind it!! Matthieu Barret, the legendary w**emaker behind Domaine du Coulet, embarked on an adventure to make his own playful range of w**es using serious technique. The Matthieu Barret w**es are considered to be some of the most coveted, yet accessible ($33 on our shelf) natural w**es in France.

This cuvee is a 100% Cinsault, Clairet-style w**e featuring a highly expressive nose of crushed strawberries, and a very supple, low-tannin palate. It is a delightful, fresh, and highly digestible w**e.

Jour de Fete forreallll. Such a fun one and such good value for the price ($28). It’s got this crunchy blueberry bramble thing going on, but with amazing clarity. Feels like you can pick out each grape variety in the blend. Pinot Noir’s umami, Gamay’s juiciness, and Mondeuse’s darker, iron notes. With a tiny chill on it, this is fun to drink alone or with a beautiful, fuller meal.

BANGING CHENIN!! With Frontières Floues, Clément Poirel offers a free (and delicious) interpretation of Chenin on the schist hillsides of Beaulieu-sur-Layon. The cuvée is vinified with maceration, giving the w**e its orange color and a slightly tannic texture that challenges the norms of classic white w**e.

The nose blends candied citrus, dried flowers, and sweet spices. On the palate, the w**e remains straight and textured, carried by a beautiful freshness that extends the finish. So unique, so amazing, so gastronomic too. This with some spicy food or roasted chicken or something would HIT.

Antony Tortul isn’t your typical w**emaker. He’s a rebel, a visionary, and a true punk rock soul in the world of natural w**e. After years of working in vineyards across the South of France, from Bergerac to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Antony ditched the conventional path and founded La Sorga in 2008. His mission? Revel c***rs are in, born in Ontario Canada.

Revel C***r & ibi W**es is a Guelph, Ontario-based fermentory founded in 2014 by Tariq Ahmed, making wild-fermented c***r, natural w**e, and vermouth from locally foraged and farmed Ontario fruits and botanicals. The ibi label extends the project into hybrid and vinifera grape w**es, all made with the same spontaneous fermentation and minimal-intervention ethos. Revel ships its characterful, dry, and funky releases across Canada, the US, and Europe.

SOIF:

two spontaneously fermented c***rs aged on cherries and strawberries, and added almost one tonne of red w**e skins (Maréchal Foch) for an extra few months of skin contact. It’s a red fruit bonanza,

PEAS IN A POD

C***r with blackcurrants, Cabernet Franc and De Chaunac. delightful fruit, straddling the line between grapes, cherries and vanilla..
Peas in a Pod has huge blackcurrant aromas, with underlying notes of vanilla and wildflowers. De Chaunac lends acidity, while the Cab Franc brings tannin and complexity.

LINE DRAWING

A c***r aged on orange w**e skins. Weighty and richly textured, Line Drawing echoes the character of orange w**e while remaining distinctly c***r, carrying apricot, honey, and peach-tea notes. It evokes yarrow flowers, white tea, ripe peaches, and wildflower honeycomb.
