Tucker and Junior were walking through the tall grass and I guess the height of the grass fooled a hawk into thinking they were a lot smaller than they were. Saw it swoop down and realize at the last second they weren't tiny birds but big old boys and it took off so fast it almost crashed. Tucker and Junior chased it a few feet but they are ultimately lazy and quit.

Lost one of the girls a couple days ago. Starling decided to be broody out in the pen. She dug herself a nest under a log and was missed at bedtime. An opportunistic critter got into the pen and ended her. The pen has since been fixed. This is the reason we secure the coop and lock up at night. It is difficult to make a wire pen entirely secure. Not impossible but we don't see at the same level as small animals and mistakes are sometimes made. Our fence panels were moved bit just enough to allow a small critter to slip in. Secured the panels with some t posts, added fence, and gravel. Picture of Starling eating dinner. It looks messy but it's just chicken crumbles in water, helps keep them hydrated as well as fed.

Junior is the hatch mate of Tucker. He is a son of Mr. D and Iris. Love the black spangling he has on the front. He is a laid back rooster who kinda just floats around and doesn't get upset by much. Loves food and will eat out of your hand given the chance. Junior is open to new spaces but currently enjoying free ranging around here.

Tucker hatched last year. Iris raised him but I believe Lemon is his biological mom due to the barring. Love Tucker he is so much fun to have around. He is open to moving to a new location but he is fine here as well. He's been free ranging with his hatch brother Junior. Tucker is out of Mr. D's line. There is a genetic marker where they get a white streak in the long tail feathers. If they were for show it would be a mark against them but since they are just yard ornaments it is a fun way to identify their lineage. He's a great boy, you can walk right up to him and he's always interested in what's going on.

A lesson I learned early on is that the bantam hens do not appreciate fake eggs that are regular size. They will go out of their way to not only remove them from the nest but from the entire coop. Recently I discovered that they do like these little ping pong/golf ball looking things. I thought because they were so light they would end up tossing them out but they love them. The broody hens have fully accepted that these are eggs and will hide them up in their wings during nest checks. lol Excuse the mess in the nest box, currently my Brabanter hens are in with the bantams and they have been enjoying tossing out bedding and making a general mess.

This is Whitney. She hatched last year. Her mom Opie is a Crested Cream Legbar/Silkie cross. Her father was one of the mix cochin roosters running around. Love her little blonde crest. She is kind of at the bottom of the pecking order and is very sweet. Every night Whitney asks me to put her up on the roost. She can fly up there but then has to fight for a spot. I can put her up between two of the other laid back hens so she feels safe.

Iris and Mr. D together since 2021. Iris was working on going broody again. This girl likes to be a momma. The move into their new area has disrupted her ambitions for now. Safer area so when she is ready maybe she'll get babies this year. She insisted on hatching last year but due to rain and another hen killing some of the chicks she only hatched two roosters, Junior and Tucker.

Trying a new waterer. This barrel can hold 15 gallons of water. Only problem is sometimes they hit the water cup and turn it so it all spills out. Going to work on setting up some sort of lock to prevent this. Otherwise it is working great.

While we were busy this last week working on the run, the chickens were busy getting into trouble. Not the least of which was Patriot finding himself some new bling to attract the ladies. He wasn't happy when I took it away.
