Did you know chicken eggs come in different colors? The color of the egg is determined by the breed of chicken.
The Leghorn breed lays white eggs, while the Rhode Island Red and Wyandotte breeds lay brown eggs and the Ameraucana breed lays blue eggs, etc.
Did you also know egg yolks come in different colors??? Yolk colors aren’t determined by breed. Yolk colors are determined by the bird’s diet!
Birds on basic layer feed typically have a bland yellow yolk. Diets higher in corn make the yolk brighter yellow. Free range birds can have a variety of yolk colors.
Here’s a great example…. Our birds have been getting excess produce lately, lots of red peppers, and the yolks look like this!
