We’re rotating the girls pretty frequently now and I think we have a good system down. Leches should be due in the fall and Zinnia will be getting bred here in the next month or so. We have kids on the ground and will begin milking the does soon.. I can already taste the fresh cheese and yogurt. 🤤
I’m so incredibly grateful for our chaotic life.

Tres Leches 🍰 and Zinnia 🌸

Our girl Leches is due in September-ish with an angus and we couldn’t be more excited. Here’s to hoping for a bull calf 🤞

Until then, these beautiful girls are rotational grazing and tormenting the pigs. 🐽

Nothing beats coming home to this. 😌

When I say “Sorry I didn’t respond, I was busy!” This is what I mean. 😅
Here’s a glimpse of my 9am-3:45pm today. I didn’t make the slightest dent in my to-do list. But you gotta start somewhere!
Between the kids, school, work, the farm and whatever time I find to workout, I am slowly hacking away at our to-do list. (You know, like start the nursery or get a crib for our 7 month old🥴)
I often wonder what people not going back to college or farms do daily. Is everyone always this busy?

As promised… here’s Z. 💕 AKA Zinnia.
BUTTT I’ve held off posting. Why? Because the world is going to s**t and I’ve sat and done nothing about it to avoid stirring the pot, which is disgusting of me. So while yes, this post is about Z.. it’s also about urging you to give a s**t about what’s going on. People are being murdered - in the streets, in detention centers, in schools, in churches. People are being murdered.. By each other, by police, by ICE.

And as a parent, it fu***ng sucks. How do I explain to my kids it’s a free country, but you’re Hispanic so it’s not *that* free. You can and should exercise your second amendment right, but you can’t go to a protest with a firearm unless you’re a white male who has an AR-15 style rifle and travel across state lines and kill protesters.
I just want to make it extremely clear where things stand here on the farm - f**k ICE. F**k Donald Trump. Free Palestine.

And meet our new girl Z. A registered jersey who will be our new milk cow. 🥰🐮

What to even say about your first milk cow? How to even say it?
🍑Peaches🍑
A first milk cow teaches you so much. Patience, forgiveness, dedication, discipline. They’re the center point of your farm. She teaches you how to run on someone else’s schedule. She teaches you to be grateful. She provides you with so much. She becomes part of your family.
Peaches sure was something. I had no idea what I was doing when I got her. She was so patient with me as I tried to milk and learn how to do it efficiently. She’d stand there for the full hour and a half it took me in the beginning. Soon we had a routine down and I had her in and out of the barn in 20 minutes(though we’d often sit together for a while after as I brushed her). Every night she’d stand and listen to be complain, let me lean my head against her warm belly during the winter as I milked. Heard me as I sobbed, laughed, sung and vented to her. It’s therapy to sit and milk a cow while you talk about everything and nothing with them - to them?

She taught our old lady, Tres Leches, how to be a young cow again. She raised a calf for us and was the best mom. She let the kids ride her.

Peaches was being bred at a facility when I got the message she passed away unexpectedly. What do you mean my girl who provided us with milk, cheese, butter, cream, ice cream, yogurt and so much more is gone? So I won’t be greeted at the gate every night by her anymore? But our friendship still had so much growing to do? She hasn’t even really met our newest baby. He would have loved her.
Im glad she was with Tres Leches when she passed. I hope she knew how much she meant to our family… how much she meant to me.
So, to my first milk cow - thank you. Thank you for humbling the hell out of me. Thank you for listening to me. Thank you for teaching me. Thank you for helping me raise my daughter.. for teaching her respect and routine. Thank you for letting me learn and grow with you. Thank you for being the thing my entire farm was centered on. Thank you for teaching me how to be a better herdsman so I can be better for the next cow. Enjoy your retirement, sweet girl. ❤️

Michigan is considering legalizing the sale of raw milk from dairy farms. It sounds really great and allows for families, who would normally not be able to access raw milk, to get raw milk. 🥛🐮
But..
It’s dumb. I drink raw milk but am fully aware of the dangers that come with it. Pasteurization is a thing for a reason! Modern science has taught us how dangerous drinking raw milk can be. I ensured to properly educate myself on the risks vs benefits (via peer reviewed, scientific, published papers and studies… not someone off of Facebook who has no credentials or the facilities to perform tests/studies🙄) and decided I felt comfortable drinking raw milk if I’m the one handling it. I know how it’s handled, stored, filtered, etc. Often times, even, I pasteurize our milk before drinking. The rest of the milk I use for cooking, cheese, baking, etc and it’s heated to the necessary temperature for long enough to kill any dangerous bacteria.
Seeing raw milk on the shelves for consumption is going to cause a false sense of security for those who may not know the risks of consuming raw milk. The benefits of raw milk can be received via other, safer, natural ways.
Ask any large scale dairy farmer if they’d drink raw milk and they’d likely say no.
I’m not saying to not drink raw milk, I’m saying know the risks and the benefits of drinking raw milk. And remember: the benefits from raw milk can be found in other natural ways too. And for the love of all things holy, please do NOT give your young children raw milk. 😩

Sincerely,
A raw milk drinker. 💌

P.s. look in comments for articles on the matter if you’re so inclined to educate yourself.
