Busy busy!
I've got a 'few' starts and flowers to get in the ground now that we're past frost.
I'll be showing you my favorite way to easily go from grass to garden in just a couple days.

It's berry season!

Blackberries on the vine ripen at different intervals and the question I hear most often is "How do you know when they're ripe enough to pick?"
My simple answer for you is, they'll fall right off. If you have to pull hard, they're not ready.
In my experience these berries will grow in clusters of three to five, and the one in the center always ripens first.
This year I'll be making blackberry and pinot noir jam to add some depth of flavor, blackberry crisps, and blackberry syrup for over ice cream or pancakes!
What are your favorite ways to enjoy blackberries?

FINALLY!!!
Many of the radishes I started are not producing plump roots thanks to the crazy weather we've had. (Freezing to 90 in a week)
I was beginning to wonder if we'd get any, or if they'd all bolt, so I'm feeling pretty lucky pulling these pretties out of the beds this morning!

Leeks!!!
While I love a good glove, these babies needed a tender touch to get their roots in place.
I interplanted beets to utilize space while the leeks are small. The leeks will help deter pests from the beets.

Breaking up clay

The summer heat has done a fine job of drying out our thick clay soil, but it can be hard to work with in this state! I plan on planting bulbs in this area so I've given it a good soaking and covered it to maintain moisture. I am mixing in some clay busting soil ammendments to help make this soil easier to work with and grow in.
This area is right over our septic lines between tank/parts so I'm going with shallow rooting bulbs rather than deep rooting plants.
Here's the beginning after soaking the existing soil.
