Miss Dixie enjoying some hugs on a chilly morning❤️

Dixie is still doing amazing she is slowly gaining more weight! We did discover that she has some hock issues, we will soon be getting X-Rays done to see how bad they are. Currently she seems comfortable in the field, the only issue is we are unable to pick up her hind feet for trims or hoof care. My current plan for long term is to teach her how to lay down to have her feet trimmed.

I will keep everyone updated on her hock issues and thank you to everyone who has followed her journey so far!

Also just just a reminder we are still getting eggs please message me for eggs!!

With temperatures dropping the farm stand is closed for the winter.

Next summer I plan to re open with new farm stand, the old tv stand I painted doesn’t like being outside and is beginning to fall apart!

The ladys have done a fabulous job of laying tons of eggs this summer but with colder weather and shorter days my hens egg production has slowed down, we also sadly lost 3 of our girls last week to predators leaving us with only 12 hens.

We should still get around a dozen eggs every other day this winter so please feel free to message me for eggs!

Next summer we will also be getting some new chicks! I am planing on adding some white laying hens to my flock, so we will have dark brown, a few light brown, light green, and white eggs! I am also debating on moss eggers, they lay a really dark green egg. Does anyone have any suggestions on chicken breeds that lay fun colored eggs?

Anyways that’s probably enough of me rambling on about my plans for next summer, I would just like to say it has been an amazing summer thank you to everyone who has stopped by the farm stand! For everyone interested in Dixie’s recovery journey I will continue to post updates about her!

Please read!!

Two days ago, while I was riding my mom’s horse, Lady, on Wallace Hill Road, multiple cars sped by us. Of the ten cars that passed us, only about three slowed down. When one car sped by, probably going 50 mph (the speed limit is 35), my worst fear happened, a rock kicked up from the car and hit Lady. Luckily, neither of us got injured.

Please slow down for not only horse riders but also cyclists, people walking, and running. A rock could kick up at any moment and hurt someone.

It is a Vermont state law to slow down for horses on roads!

Miss Dixie enjoying some hay inside on a rainy day with her best friend Hope.

When I first discovered my passion for horses, I was determined to own a mule, but many discouraged me, telling me that mules, especially those with a troubled past, can harbor resentment towards people. But when we met this incredible mule, we knew we had to rescue her. Since the day we met Dixie, despite her initial state, she has consistently shown remarkable kindness and trust towards people. Initially, she may seem timid, but once you gain her trust, she showers you with affection and eagerly seeks ear scratches. As Dixie's true personality shines through, she has become the first to greet us at the gate. At dinner time, she enthusiastically announces her presence, bringing joy to our barn.

We love all of our equine friends equally but Dixie has definitely made my childhood dreams come true!

Even with the farm stand closing soon I will continue to post updates about Dixie’s journey!

Can you believe it’s only been two weeks since this amazing girl arrived at our farm.

Dixie’s old owner had her for 3 months after buying her from the auction, during these 3 months she had been “trying” to get her to gain weight before selling her. During those 3 months she was feeding Dixie 4 quarts of purina grain twice a day, that amount of grain weighs around 4-5 pounds. Horses/mules are not supposed to eat more than 2.5 pounds of grain per feeding as it can cause stomach ulcers and digestive issues.

The real question we had when we bought Dixie is even though that much grain is bad she should have still been gaining weight from all the food, so what was causing her to not gain weight during the three months her old owner had her?

Our first thought was her teeth, mules and horses teeth can grow sharp points causing it to be painful to eat. Three days after we brought Dixie home our amazing equine dentist came out to see her. After examining her mouth he found multiple sharp points and that her back teeth were high causing her to not be able to process food properly. This would explain why Dixie would take a few bites then leave food, because it was to painful to eat it all in one sitting. We are unsure if she always cleaned up all the grain her old owner gave her, but we believe if she did it was just because she liked the taste of it enough to bear through the pain.

The day after Dixie had her dental work she cleaned up her food for the first time! Soon after we started seeing a change in her weight.

At our barn we feed grain free, meaning we use forage feeds and supplements. Would you believe me if I told you all this mule gets now is:
1 cup (.5lb)Timothy pellets
1/2 (.1lb)cup beet shreds (this will increase soon as she is still getting used to the taste)
1 scoop Vermont blend
1 tablespoon salt
We are still introducing vitamin e and our probiotic
Over night she gets 8qts (.3lb)of chopped alfalfa that she can eat along with her hay
She also gets free choice first and second cut hay

When it comes to horses and mules gaining weight variety in forage is one of the best things you can do for them that is why Dixie gets Timothy, beet, alfalfa, first cut hay, and second cut hay. Dixie also gets short amounts of time on grass, the sugars in grass are high this time of year so too much sugar for a mule in her condition could harm her.

Our next step in Dixie’s journey is to take her to New England equine vet clinic, to have them fully examine her. The reason why she hasn’t been brought there yet is because the trip takes 2.5 hours and Dixie isn’t strong enough for the trip quite yet.

Dixie is gaining weight! Only 12 days at our barn and we can already see a difference!

Yesterday we brought home a new addition to the farm! Dixie is a molly mule that is in need of some serious rehab. So if you are stopping at the farm stand and see an extremely skinny mule just know that she will be a healthy weight soon! Dixie is extremely friendly and may even come to the fence to see you but please do NOT feed her anything, we are carefully monitoring her diet.
