Gate to Great/Horse Creek Thoroughbreds

Gate to Great/Horse Creek Thoroughbreds The Gate to Great Program at Horse Creek Thoroughbreds gives racehorses a second chance through a unique ranchwork training program.

Through the Gate to Great, Great Geldings Program, we provide a rehabilitation process that gives Thoroughbred geldings a chance to recover from the rigors of a racing career and time to develop new skills outside the racetrack environment. Relying on our experience using Thoroughbreds for ranch work, we expose former racehorses to tasks necessary for success in new vocations, be it on the range or in the arena. We are proud to see our horses go from the starting gate to GREAT mounts for any discipline!

Fox Rox ("Rocky") gets some practice during his early stages of learning to rope. This tough little New York-bred by Officer had 26 wins from 123 starts. He was a fixture at Presque Isle Downs, where he made the winner's circle 12 times and Tampa Bay another 7 photos. In all, he bank-rolled almost $570,000. Fox Rox broke his maiden in the Aspirant Stakes, winning by a whopping 18 1/4 lengths going 6 furlongs, but nobody could have anticipated he would race for another TEN years! We can't say enough about these kinds of war horses that fall through the cracks- but Rocky has landed in a good spot on the high plains of western South Dakota thanks to Summer Thurber's Silver Race Farm and Gate to Great.

Bluebirds Over was enjoying a little taste of fall that's in the air. This 6 yr-old son of champion English Channel is a graded stakes winner and will make a wonderful show horse with bragging rights to boot. His dam-side is loaded with stakes horses and champions, giving him an aristocratic air. And speaking of air, this guy just floats across the ground. We're thinking dressage or jumping disciplines are in his 16-hand future.

Today is the Traver's Stakes at Saratoga, also known as the Midsummer Derby. Did you know there have been two dead-heat finishes in this event? In 2012, Golden Ticket and Alpha made history in the 143rd running. The other record came in the 11th running, back in 1874. Golden Ticket was the color-bearer for Magic City Thoroughbred Partners (Carter Stewart & Ken Schlenker) of Billings, Montana. The Kenny McPeek trainee beat his odds, hitting the wire with Godolphin's home-bred Alpha, conditioned by Kiaran McLaughlin. The track's artists were tasked doubly for the traditional painting of the winning colors on the infield canoe. Since 1962 the once blue canoe has been painted, leading famous turf writer Red Smith to comment, "Radical changes are not popular here." Golden Ticket...Golden Tempo - what history will be made today?

Rico and Dale have a gentle session with a calf on throwing a loop and tracking. A break-away hondo was used so the little guy wasn't harmed and Rico received the full benefit of the concepts. This training preceeded a weekend packed with plenty of fall cattle work. With the extreme drought, cattle are headed to market earlier this year and ranchers are making harsh cuts of dry cows. For some operations, the reductions are deeper and threaten the future of generational ranches. Our nation's herd numbers are dangerously low for a number of reasons, such as drought, which spilled over into hay/grain markets. The controversy over how to save animal production agriculture and reduce consumer pain at the grocery store escalated recently. What is your take on the situation?

This cat isn't afraid of water. Walking across the frame supporting the irrigation tarp, Kitty hunts for bugs escaping the flood of water destined for a hay field. Old style flood irrigation still gets the job done, especially in a dry summer.
