Another good reason to get my vegetable garden beds cleaned up in the fall, or at least much earlier in the spring...instead of growing tomatoes in this corner, we're growing a nest of baby birds!

A quick Google search makes me think they are Killdeer hatchlings. I'm so glad Nastia spotted them before we pulled too much of their cover away. Hopefully they won't be noticed by any predators, including our cats. I know we have to just leave them alone, it will be hard not to keep checking on them now that I know they are there!

The farm stand is open for the season!

I have garden plants ready to go in the ground...tomatos, bell peppers, eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, and cucumbers, plus some herbs and p***y willow starts!

Cash or venmo, on the honor system.

And as always, I want people to take what they need and pay what they can 💚

All set up at the Newman Community Market. I'll be here until 11, so come see me!

There's not much to harvest in the garden right now. I haven't even planted much yet because of the cool, damp days. But the rhubarb is thriving!

I will have a limited amount of fresh rhubarb for sale tomorrow at the Newman Community Market.

If you love rhubarb, but would rather have me do your baking, I've got that covered, too. I'll have rhubarb butter, buttermilk rhubarb bread, and mini rhubarb crisps at my table.

I am definitely turning into my grandmother, and I'm not bothered by it. Things are getting too expensive to keep throwing it all away. And I wouldn't describe myself as crunchy, but I do think about plastic, and especially single-use plastic, more than I used to.

That's also why you'll find some of my plants for sale in cottage cheese containers 😂

Reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose, right?

I love starting my own garden vegetables from seed, and I've also started saving some seeds from my native perennials to add to my flower beds (mostly black-eyed susans, echinacea, and blue sage).

But I also LOVE being a customer at some of my favorite local greenhouses. Just look at these beautiful finds! Our local small businesses have so much to offer. Don't miss them on the way to the big box stores.

My favorite way to start mornings on the farm is with a cup of tea on the side porch and watching the birds at my feeders.

I’ve had some lovely visitors this week. And I’m enjoying the Merlin app to help me identify and learn their songs.

I also saw my first hummingbird a few days ago!

There is something very grounding about starting my day with the sun on my face, tea in hand, listening to birdsong, and talking to God. It doesn't happen every day, but I cherish each time it does.

Have a blessed day!

Dan's grandma taught me much of what I know about gardening, and one of the things I remember her saying is that you pick rhubarb in the months without the letter R...May, June, July and August (although August rhubarb can be pretty woody).

I broke that rule today because this rhubarb was more than ready for its first harvest.

We moved these plants a few years ago and I could not believe how massive the root systems were. I was afraid I'd killed them, and they acted very dramatic about the move for a year or two, but they seem to be happy and healthy now.

I love getting to spend some time in my greenhouse on New Year’s Day!

I cleaned up a bit and potted some rosemary and thyme cuttings that I rooted on my kitchen windowsill. It never gets old to me to watch roots grow from a twig.

I was excited to see that some of the sedum I'd propogated at the end of summer were growing. My greenhouse door blew open on a very cold day a couple of weeks ago, and all the foliage froze and died. I was afraid they were a lost cause, but they are making a comeback!

2025 was a lot. Actually, so was 2024. I wouldn't be sad if we have a very boring 2026.

But my sedum reminded me that even when all I can see is loss and disappointment and failure, things are happening beneath the surface that I can't see. God is at work. Growth is happening.

Happy New Year, friends! May we grow in all the best ways this year...in hope, in faith, in compassion, in kindness, and in love. 🌱💚
