The Queen’s Roost

The Queen’s Roost Welcome to our page for The Queen's Roost! This is a place to keep up with how things are going on our small family farm.

So far we have chickens, ducks and have just added turkeys and guineas.

It may have been a blizzard outside today, but that didn’t stop me from starting some seeds.

Shout out to Loki, for not only helping make the bed this morning (in his own way), but also paying rent by deposit a gift at the foot of my bed in the early morning hours. Thanks for controlling the farm’s rodent population sir.

She walks out with 3 apple trees, 4 pepper plants, 1 coneflower, 7 mosquito bracelets that probably don’t work… and the bolt cutters…

This morning as I was doing chores, I came to the discovery that Sapphire, my blue Swedish duck hen, had been attacked by something overnight. I can’t get a close enough look at her, as she has been broody and wants to kill me herself and has been on eggs for 3 weeks because of that. I’m guessing, that’s probably why she is still alive and fought off whatever got her. She is definitely torn up but otherwise seems ok, and still wants to rip my face off when I go near the coop. Cameras caught zero motion so I’m thinking it’s possibly a mink we’ve noticed loitering around. Tonight will be sleepless as I will be on high alert. Hopefully despite this, she continues to lay on her eggs.

People will often complain about roosters crowing, but don’t realize hens singing their egg song and getting the entire flock going is even louder.

We have a new Queen on the farm!

Introducing Queen Elizabeth and her court! Buzzing happily in Buzzingham Palace! They’ve been hard at work for about a week and a half now and although the trip here for them was a bit rocky, they are moving right along and not letting that stop them!
