Better Earth Farm

Better Earth Farm A small farm in it's infancy Better Earth Farm is a small farm in Newnan, GA in its infancy. We are building the soil as the GA red clay poses some challenges.

We practice organic gardening but are not certified organic. We will be participating in three local Farmer's Markets this year, Newnan, Ashley Park and Peachtree City. Eventually we would like to do a small CSA and/or sell cut flowers to florists. We have started a small orchard with peaches, plums, plumcot, apples, muscadine grapes, black walnuts, English walnuts, blueberries, red and black rasp

berries and strawberries. We also grow heirloom tomatoes, garlic, peppers, bean, lettuce, broccoli, cabbage and much more. Arlene's passion is flowers of all kinds and will be selling plants she starts as seedlings as well as cut flowers. Matt is in charge of the bees. So far he has four hives and plans on expanding that this year. He planted an acre of clover dedicated to the bees and recently planted sourwood trees which is supposed to make some of the best honey! Ira is our equipment operator and keeps the manure piles turned, grass mowed and provided for mulch, garden areas plowed/rototilled. He also removes all the garden debris for us at the end of the season and last year did all the watering. Hopefully we will have some sort of irrigation system in place this year. Ira is also the keeper of the free range chickens and guineas. He built the coops that are nice enough to be a guest house! The hens are producing eggs now and we are getting about 6-9 eggs a day. Soon we will be able to sell eggs. Each year we will try different varieties of vegetables and see which ones perform the best and also grow some unique and unusual things for the fun of it!

What a great spread about Durrough's Country Music Barn on page 22. On page12, Letter from the Editor, she states, "Surely, the two Charleses, Wadsworth and Durrough, and the muslcal Wright and Kiser families have music flowing through their bloodstreams."

Unfortunately, we are no longer doing market gardening. It is a lot of work with long hours and a temperamental Mother Nature and we are just getting too old. We are still gardening for ourselves and want to thank everyone who encouraged and supported us in this journey. We enjoyed doing it very much.

We missed market last Saturday but we'll be back tomorrow.

The lettuce is finished, as is broccoli and cauliflower, but we have plenty of cabbage, chard, kale and a few cucumbers. Possibly some beans as well.

The hydragneas are in full bloom so there will be some large bouquets of them, blue and pink! A few gladiolus as well. The zinnias are just beginning to blossom.

We picked a couple of early, small tomatoes but it looks like it's still going to be a couple of weeks before we have any to bring to market. I know people are anxious for them!

Luck was with us last week and we got all the remaining rows prepped and the strong winds didn't tear anything up.

We harvested our first leaf lettuce and it was a lot. Since we don't start market until April 9, we shared with friends and family and boy, have we been eating a lot of salads!

We did have a bit of rain which made it nice for weeding again. I am still trying to get my much neglected row of iris weeded and I am making progress!

Asparagus is coming in and David has really been enjoying it. I spotted a few red strawberries too!

Today we planted another row of tomatoes. The final row will wait a bit since I had trouble with germination this year and the last batch were just potted up to paper pots last week. They're still pretty small.

I planted cucumbers, melon, squash, four kinds of basil and some beans in the greenhouse for transplanting. The beans are in a piece of guttering and the Jade beans have already started to germinate. We are doing the triple color collection again this year, green, yellow and purple. What fun!

The zinnias (new seeds) germinated and will be transplanted in a couple of weeks. Most of the old seed didn't germinate but I will throw the rest of it out in a row and water it for the bees. Usually I mix any older seeds and do this. Sometimes you get some surprises.

Progress at the farm.

We have been trying to prep eight more garden rows before more rain. Lots of delays but today we finally got them spread with compost and four with newspaper and straw mulch. We'll try and finish tomorrow but I need to check the weather because someone said the rain prediction is now delayed until Friday. Okay by me, lots more to do!

These past few days have been very warm, hitting mid 80s, but the cooler weather is coming again this weekend. We have set out 17 tomato plants so far so they will have to be covered as the temps are supposed to dip into the mid 30s.

Lettuce is doing well, as are all the broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Chinese cabbage. Chard, spinach, kale and peas look good. I just planted more beets, carrots, turnips and radishes.

The transplanted root veggies (an experiment) are looking well, Now, I am keeping my fingers crossed that transplanting won't interrupt the root growth.

And the flowers! Snapdragons are doing well. I planted along a fence because I got some really tall ones this year. Between each plant, today I planted a gladiolus, also to use the fence for support. I am working smart for a change! The row was mulched last fall so I'm just pulling it back and planting. Hopefully no weeding this year.

Hopefully I can get some photos on Saturday.

The garden is coming along and our first day at Peachtree City Farmer's Market will be April 9. Hope to see you there!
