Another Perfect Afternoon at the Historic Boathouse

This year marked the third Feast of the Local Fishes, where once again we gathered at the Historic U.S. Coast Guard Boathouse for an afternoon showing off the best of the Tillamook Coast. This particular day greeted us with calm water, balmy air, and clear skies - totally opposite to the raining-sideways we’ve experienced in past years.

Mona and Jaret of Tournant to teamed up with Alanna of Shifting Tides (and Winter Waters co-founder) for another celebration of sea-to-table connection. Thank you for sponsoring us, Visit Tillamook Coast!

What happens when you bring fishermen, chefs, and a full dining room together? A sold out night of incredible food and real conversation!

Back in mid-February, as part of our month-long seafood series, we gathered at Squatchsami’s new brick and mortar in Lincoln City. Every seat was filled as guests gathered for an evening centered around Oregon caught seafood and the stories behind it. Known for their scratch made fish and chips and commitment to sourcing locally, Squatchsami continues to prove that comfort food can carry a powerful message.

The night featured Cari and Cody of Chelsea Rose Seafood, a fishing family based in Newport. Guests heard firsthand what it takes to run a small fishing operation, from navigating quotas to prioritizing quality and zero waste practices.

With Oregon caught albacore and lingcod on the menu, everyone had the chance to taste the difference while learning directly from the people who harvest it! The conversation continued through a seafood myth busting game, where we tested the group's knowledge of how Oregon’s fisheries really work.

More than anything, this evening was a reminder that our coastal food system is deeply interconnected. Thank you to Squatchsami, Chelsea Rose Seafood, and everyone who joined us for such a meaningful night. And a special thank you to Explore Lincoln City for supporting Winter Waters and helping bring these experiences to life on the coast.

What a night! On February 15, Winter Waters teamed up with Sea Horsey Bottle Shop in Lincoln City for Sip the Sea, an evening of Oregon seafood and small production Pacific Northwest wines. The tasting room slowly filled on a sunny coastal afternoon as guests settled in for a creative multi course pairing featuring the cooking of Gabe Kieffer of PicNic Eats.

We kicked things off with a glass of 2023 Joie De Vivre from Lagniappe Wines and one of the most unexpected bites of the night: a Butter Clam and Cockle Cannoli. The sesame, ginger, and tamari shell was filled with a bright clam salad that was sweet, savory, and totally mind blowing 🤯

From there, the evening unfolded with course after course celebrating Oregon seafood. A Black Cod Noodle Salad with miso and wakame paired with a lively white, followed by Netarts Bay oysters topped with a ginger lemon kombucha mignonette 🦪 Guests also enjoyed an Albacore Tiradito inspired by Gabe’s travels in Peru, featuring beet cured albacore with chili, lime, and kombu.

Many of the ingredients came directly from small Oregon fisheries, including tuna, black cod, and rockfish supplied by Chelsea Rose Seafood out of Newport. Gabe even spent weeks coordinating with divers to source butter and cockle clams from Tillamook Bay, a reminder of the dedication it takes to bring truly local seafood to the table.

Dessert brought a bright finish with lemon olive oil cake, blood orange marmalade, and seaweed Swiss meringue buttercream 🍋 The evening wrapped up with a special pour of Suzor x Sea Horsey “Find Me In The Waves” red wine paired with rockfish escabeche.

Huge thanks to Michelle and Shawn at Sea Horsey Bottle Shop for bringing this collaboration to life, and to Explore Lincoln City for supporting Winter Waters events in the community 🌊

After Saturday’s Blue Line Newport tour, the Winter Waters weekend continued with a Seafare Brunch at Local Ocean Seafoods on February 8. We gathered with fishermen, community members, and visiting food writers for a relaxed “morning after” meal overlooking Yaquina Bay. It was the perfect moment to reflect on the stories and connections built throughout the weekend while sitting right on Newport’s working waterfront.

Local Ocean Seafoods is known for its dock to table philosophy, often listing the boat and captain who caught the fish served on the plate! The brunch highlighted how Oregon’s local seafood can elevate classic comfort dishes.

The menu began with Uni Deviled Eggs made with sea urchin from OoNee Sea Ranch, balanced with roasted squash, smoked oyster, crème fraîche, and crispy fried dulse. Oregon Pink Shrimp Chilaquiles followed, featuring sweet MSC certified shrimp tossed with tortilla chips, salsa verde, a medium fried egg, and cilantro avocado crema. A decadent Dungeness Crab Benedict paired the famous Oregon crab with house smoked pork belly and fried Yukon potatoes, celebrating Newport’s title as the Dungeness Crab Capital of the World.

The meal finished with an elderflower panna cotta with poached rhubarb and mint, a bright and delicate ending to a deeply savory brunch. As coffee cups lingered on the table, the conversation continued and the weekend slowly came to a close.

Thank you to Discover Newport Oregon for supporting Winter Waters programming in Newport and helping bring people together to celebrate Oregon’s working waterfront and the incredible seafood it produces.

Our 4th annual Seaweed Cyanotypes workshop brought art and ocean science together on February 12 at Circle Creek Conservation Center in Seaside, in partnership with North Coast Land Conservancy. This year’s gathering was especially meaningful as it coincided with the 10 year anniversary of the Cape Falcon Marine Reserve, celebrating a decade of marine protection along the North Coast.

Participants learned the historic cyanotype printing process and the art of pressing seaweed before creating their own compositions using locally collected seaweeds. After a little winter sunshine and a rinse in water, the prints revealed their iconic deep blue color. By the end of the day, more than 100 unique prints filled the display wall, each one inspired by the textures and diversity of our coastal ecosystems.

Thank you to North Coast Land Conservancy, Block Studio, Shifting Tides, and the City of Seaside Tourism Advisory Committee for helping make this creative coastal gathering possible. Thanks, Visit Seaside, Oregon!

On February 6, Winter Waters and Seafood and Gender Equality brought together women and gender minorities working in aquaculture for the Newport Women of the Water gathering at Central Coast Food Web. The day was part of a national effort to gather regional insights that will inform the upcoming Women of the Water Field Guide.

Participants shared their experiences across the aquaculture sector, discussed challenges faced on the working waterfront, and explored ways to strengthen support and opportunity for underrepresented voices in the industry. The group also toured innovative local operations at Yaquina Lab, including a seaweed R&D farm and the sea urchin aquaculture setup at OoNee Sea Ranch.

The day wrapped up with locally sourced seafood bites from Local Ocean Seafoods and continued conversation about building a stronger, more inclusive blue economy.

Thank you to Discover Newport, Women of the Water, SAGE, Yaquina Lab, Central Coast Food Web, and Local Ocean Seafoods for helping make this gathering possible.
