Happy Fourth of July!🇺🇸 Yesterday’s storm was intense and the heat is still strong. Quail are hardy birds but keep checking their water dishes so they don’t run out. Consider spoiling them with a slice of watermelon or whatever fruit you have available. They will enjoy it. 🥰

Wild memory from a few years back. Thankful to never have had this particular problem again. Gorgeous rainbow pic by my daughter.

Absolutely gorgeous double rainbow half way thru all the thunderstorms of yesterday. We needed the rain for our orchard but perhaps not THAT much. Unfortunately the amount of rain we got flooded our little creek into our second aviary. In the middle of the storm, I went to check on my birds. Thankful I did because it has NEVER flooded one of my aviaries before but all my birds were practically swimming. Immediately I rescued each one- my daughter who assisted may have gotten a shoe full of worms while helping me catch them all. Every last bird was brought indoors (all 90 of them 🙄), dried off and given extra treats. We didn’t lose a single bird! Every quail fluffed up and made a full recovery. Today I will band them and put them with my older birds as a temporary housing option until we can trouble shoot and repair their current enclosure so nothing like that happens again. Farm life is an adventure sometimes!

Have a few broody hens over here who decided to hatch their own eggs. I might have 2 or I might have 20. 😂 Not gonna disturb mama and let her keep her secrets for now. But there is a lot of movement under her feathers as she protectively cares for her little ones. Moments like this always make my heart happy.

Over here in north jersey we got slammed with 37in of snow. (As of midnight last night) Checked on our birds and they are healthy and thriving. As long as your quail have a place to get out of snow, wind, rain, sun…they will be fine. Hardy and resilient whatever the weather. Took all morning shoveling just to get into their aviaries and had to shovel out a bunch of snow that must have blown sideways into their run. Be aware, if your electric fence is buried (like mine) it probably isn’t working…you either need to shovel out around it or be vigilant as predators can easily jump that snow into your runs. 😉 Stay warm everyone!

Lots of snow here. My spoiled quail got some time outside their aviary today two at a time to explore the snow. They were fun to watch as they ran, flew, and picked at the ground in curiosity. As much fun as it was, and as hardy as they are in cold climate, they happily ran back into their aviary for the fresh food I placed out for them. It’s important to always have an area where your quail can get out of the snow, rain, wind, sun, etc…and be very cautious when you bring quail outside of their cages as they can and will fly away. 😉

It’s cold outside but that doesn’t stop our birds from exploring and enjoying the snow. Pictured here is one of our chickens. (Fun fact: chickens and quail can handle temps as low as -10 or even -20 degrees. 😳 Just remember to make sure your birds are able to get out of the snow/rain/wind by providing some type of enclosure or overhead protection. Always watch for frostbite and check on your birds daily.)
