Being raised on a small Florida panhandle farm, we had to save money however we could. One way was using discarded power poles or railroad ties as corner & brace posts in our fencing. It only required some manual labor on our part to collect them. It was hard work, but I never thought of it as an impossible task or a bridge too far.
Flash forward 40 years, & that is what I found myself doing today in prep for future fencing on my small farm in Alabama. Age has a way of creeping up on you. I swear the power company hollowed out the polls & filled them with cement. I cut them to a length of 7 ft before trying to load them. Loaded most of them by myself using simple leverage I learned from my Dad & Mrs. Rachel Peacock at Altha HS, but I was only able to get a couple of them on the trailer with the assistance of some very helpful neighbors.
As I sit here watching the news after taking Aleeve & putting extra strength arthritis cream on all of my aching joints, I am contemplating how much easier this seemed when I was helping my Dad many moons ago. Then again, I was 40 years younger, & even my Dad was 15 years younger than I am now.
Already dread how my back will feel when I struggle to get out of bed in the morning.
