Been there done that!
We have never sold a bull calf intact in the 6 years we have had Dexters. We had 1 prospect last year, but ended up cutting him after he was growing over his front shoulder. This year, we are carefully watching this guy. We are watching to see his posture and leg balance. We won't run any genetic testing on him until he passes all our tests.
He has been sweet since the day he was born. Has never run away from human contact, but is gently inquisitive, slowly approaching us when we are around him. He was halter trained in less than an hour. He expects good things with our interactions and has never been disappointed. He loves children because they bring either treats or a brush. At a little less than 3 months old, you can tell he is a bull calf. His mom is one of my best milk cows, she too has a sweet personality with a good udder.
Time will tell.
Go to Amazon and order these lids. They are amazing for putting on wide mouth jars, and help my littles pour their milk without spilling. The only issue I have with them, there's only 2 per pack. I've already put in another order.

I spy with my little eyes 2 things orange! 👀
While I'm stuck milking, my favorite helpers do the fun stuff, feeding treats.
So close, can almost taste the winner, winner chicken dinner!
Shortie had this sweet boy this morning. All her calves have been super sweet, and he is no exception!
Our calves don't stand a chance. They are smothered with love from the day they are born. They don't understand even how to be mean.
This is what happens to naughty cows that continually break through fences. Spent half the day fixing a hole in our fencing, enjoying the fruits of our labor tonight.
It looks like this at our house when sneaky cows get out. All hands on deck, anything with wheels is brought in. With 8 kids and 2 adults, it's chaos and the cows want no part of it.
Truth!
When they asked her if she had any advice about love... ❤
Cows got turned out onto the driveway today so we don't have to mow. Baby Bell and her calf got turned out with everyone today. They're so happy to be out with the rest of the herd!
Any idea when my cow might calve?
Edelweiss has discovered the joy of humans, specifically Abby.
Abby is a cow whisperer I swear.
Moxie is a great milk cow. Since we've gotten her as a heifer from Moosters Meadows, she has been all 4 on the floor. This is her 4th lactation, never picked up a foot, ever. Being a milk cow is her favorite thing. Even our 2 year old can milk her.
😜😂😂
Dexter brisket. So tender after 10 hours on the Traeger. We are so blessed that we have healthy, grass-fed beef available to us.
Beef provides the nutrients you need, with the taste you love. In just one 3 oz. cooked serving, you get 10 essential nutrients - including about half your Daily Value for protein - to help you power through the day!
New video done on how to pull blood to preg check! Thanks to Matt for videoing the procedure.

Sue squeezed through the gate just so she could get extra treats and attention with no competition.
We desensitize our cows to everything. This little red cow hasn't had a halter on for 3 months...look how good she picks it back up. She is currently being weaned and will be ready for her new home.
Moosters Mabel is such a great addition to our herd. Only problem is, she only likes Abby. Will only take treats from Abby. Will only let Abby brush her. Leads great...for Abby. It's a good problem, really.
Edelweiss got her first halter training lesson today. Not a fan. She does have a soft spot for the baby though, standing stock-still and enjoying the pets and love.
A busy, muddy day in the ranch. A 7 month old heifer got her weaning tab put in, Edelweiss got tagged and tail hairs pulled, and Chelsea's bull calf got steered. We ask our kids to help with a lot of our chores, and Abby was taught "nut to nut" on the castration. So glad that our vet, Dr. Rice was big on teaching us how to do our own treatments for our cows.
This is Ruby's udder at 12. She is still going strong with milking, giving us 1.5 gallons a day with no calf and once a day milking. She has large orifices and her udder is holding up well. Ruby was trained to milk at 7 years old and has done us well. Looking forward to a lot of productive years with her.
Stolen from another page, but Bernie memes are too funny...
Power has been flickering since 3:30 this morning. Matt and I got up in anticipation of losing power for good, stoking the fire and making sure coffee was brewed and hot (priorities!). Milking was quiet this morning, no power required. The cows had camped under the cedar trees in the field and were damp, but not soaked. The trees and fences are coated in a thick layer of ice, the wind blowing produces an eerie sound. It's a great day to spend inside, warm and dry with an afternoon nap in the forecast.
Chelsea gave us a lovely little boy today. They have their own stall in the heated garage in anticipation of a winter storm coming in tonight.
We went out this morning to milk, and after we were done, I was feeding cookies to the cows. But I was missing a cow, my Clementine. I shook the cookie cup, but she wouldn't come down. She wasn't due until the 29th, and I didn't see her licking a calf, but I went to investigate anyway. To my horror, there was a calf laying on the ground, frozen and covered in frost. I quickly scooped it up and started screaming for Matt to come help me. The calf was pretty lifeless, but let out a small mew. I called Vicki Jones to find out what to do and we went into action.
Baby was submerged in a lukewarm tub, and we slowly started raising the temperature. Her temp was so low, it wouldn't even register. After an hour, we got her out and started drying her. We made a tent out of blankets and put a blow drier under it to make her warmer. Matt turned up the thermostat and we cycled towels through the clothes dryer. Matt laid under the blankets with her to use his body heat to help, while Kaitlyn, Hailee, and I milked Clemmie to get colostrum. We warmed it up on a double boiler to 100 degrees and started slowly syringe feeding her. We got 15cc of colostrum in her and she was tuckered out. We let her take a nap while we opened Christmas presents. When we went to check on her, she was awake and trying to stand.
We went and grabbed Clemmie and brought her down to our heated garage and brought baby down. Clemmie immediately mooed her mama moo and started licking her. Baby stood up and went looking for the udder and we heard the sweetest sound. Baby was sucking and swallowing.
We decided to name her Edelweiss, because the Sound of Music is awesome, and she was so small and white when I first found her.
Life is never dull, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
