Our Story
Welcome to Meadowlands Farms (MF)! Our passion is quality foods and good land stewardship. Our main product is farm fresh eggs from our free ranging poultry. Our purebred fowl include araucana and ameraucana chickens which lay eggs in various shades of blue and green. Our fowl are exhibited in poultry shows around the country. Many of our birds also find new homes with breeders all over the USA as well. For now, our poultry are the backbone of the farm. They produce dozens of eggs and range our pastures with our Soay sheep herd or out in the prairie sections that are being restored on the property. Our eggs have a variety of natural shell colors that you may have never seen before. Wild harvested foods are another MF specialty we promote for good health and variety on your table. There are many plants and the wonderful fungi that are fantastic added to your menu. We also offer some other specialties that are grown here on the farm. A newer offering is Shiitake mushrooms grown on oaks harvested under forestry management here on the property. There are times we will have lamb and wool available from our beautiful Soay Sheep. This is a very rare and ancient breed of sheep. They are considered a hair sheep but can produce a spin-able wool depending on the specific animal. This pre-Roman sheep breed is very small and is perfect for the small farm. Their wool is fine and was used to make underwear way back when. Seriously, wool underwear! Soay meat is typically very lean and always delicious.
Our livestock are guarded by Sarplaninac dogs, a breed of livestock guardians that originate from Macedonia and Serbia. We offer stud service for any breed of LGD and purebred puppies on occasion. Meadowlands Farms is a USDA NPIP farm. Our poultry flock is State tested every year for your health. We maintain a disease free farm and follow Federal guidelines for disease prevention.
