Our first planting day didn’t come without some obstacles but we did what we could and are having a blast!

Me waking up early to jump around the room and record this video > actually having to wake up early to go to work 😭😭😭

Our first batch of compost tea is just straight worm castings and molasses, we will be adding kelp meal and humid acid at the end.

Tomorrow is a big planting day so gotta make sure our soil has plenty of microbial life to support our plants!

Harvesting our first batch of arugula microgreens!

Our first rack of microgreens is starting today! Just 6-8 days and they’re ready to harvest

Went out to get wood chips today and we made a new friend! Turns out these weren’t just piles of wood but they are actively decomposing piles of compost and he was gracious enough to let us have some to take home for our own farm!

Started our own worm bin! Worm castings are known as “Black Gold” for their high nutritional content and structural integrity. Here we have 2 pounds of worms (shout-out Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm) and in 3 months they should double! This is a great way to dispose of kitchen scraps and turn them into an amazing soil amendment.

Welcome to Blue Grass Gardens!

This is where we will be documenting the process of turning a 5 acre piece of land into a permaculture farm dedicated to providing the highest quality vegetables to Lexington, Kentucky and surrounding areas.

We are committed to an organic approach to gardening that implements the soil food web as the basis of our growing philosophy. Our goal is to restore the biology in our land to enhance the ability to grow vegetables using Mother Nature as our guide. For this reason we will not use any chemical fertilizers, nutrients, or pesticides as we believe these will destroy the biology in our soil.

Collectively, we have some basic gardening experience but nothing like what we are planning to take on. This will be a learning experience for all of us and we hope to be a good example of how to build a sustainable permaculture farm from the very beginning.
