When I was growing up, a handmade quilt was one of the most treasured gifts a person could receive. Some quilts were made by a singular person, but more often than not, a quilt was made by a circle of friends whose loving hands carefully created each stitch. The quilters would meet regularly and gather around a large table or loom. There, they each would work on a section of the blanket that would turn into an heirloom. While cutting, ironing, or stitching, the crafters would laugh and talk. They would tell stories about their children or their parents, or how last night's supper turned out. They would sing hymns as their labors continued.

A quilt was often sewn for a bride-to-be who would use it in her household for many years to come before passing it on to the next generation. The Nine Patch, The Eight-Pointed Star, The Log Cabin, The Wedding Ring, The Grandmother's Flower Garden. These patterns, made by loving hands, moved into a future that would be characterized by days of ups and downs, good and bad, sickness and health, joy and sadness, life and death.

The quilt represented a legacy of sorts. It represented a legacy of community and craft, of laughter and love, of hope and promise. It was a visual reminder that life goes on.

A handmade quilt is more than a blanket on the bed. It's a hug around the heart.

We got around yesterday evening to plant our garden 🪴 this year we planted golden queen corn, bush lake beans, squash, zucchini, pickling cucumbers, bell peppers, tomatoes, and black eyed peas. I also have carrots growing in a container.

Did you plant a garden this year? If so, what are you growing?

At the end of the day at least I know who I am and my true authenticity. I don’t need to do what others are doing to have any validation in my life. I’ve been living the simple life for over a decade now- it’s not a trend to me. This is my life. This is me.
