Update 💫 Freya’s twin lambs have officially found their future home! In July, they’ll be making the 671-mile journey to Eagle Village, Alaska; a remote community with a population of just 64 people.

Their new family plans to use them for both fiber and milk production, helping support a more self-sufficient homestead lifestyle. 🙌🏻 As a farm, it’s always exciting to see our animals find homes where they’ll have an important purpose. We think it’s pretty amazing that these two will be headed to one of Alaska’s most remote villages!

We’ll be enjoying them for a few more weeks before their big adventure begins. 🩵🩷

Meet “Skelmir” 🤍🖤🤍

We’ve decided to keep this handsome ram lamb intact and are excited to watch him grow and see what he brings to the future of our flock.

Skelmir (pronounced SKELL-meer) is an Old Norse name meaning trickster, rogue, or mischievous one. It felt like the perfect fit, as he’s the son of MellaBelle Farm Shetlands Harley Quinn and grandson of SleepyHollow Joker. We wanted a name that honored that side of his pedigree while still fitting the Norse and Shetland roots we love.

His dam, Harley Quinn, comes from the wonderful breeding program at MellaBelle Farm, and we’re thrilled to carry on some of those genetics here at Hansen Heritage Homestead.

Welcome to the future, Skelmir. We can’t wait to see the ram you become.

Shetland Duck Eggs Update: 🐣 🖤

Out of the 17 Shetland duck eggs we had flown up from our breeder in Ohio, we were thrilled to hatch 8 healthy ducklings. Considering the stress that shipping can be on hatching eggs, we’re pleased with the ratio and excited to have this new bloodline join our flock here in Alaska.

One of the ducklings hatched out yellow rather than displaying the typical Shetland coloration. While unexpected traits can occasionally appear, our focus remains on preserving and improving the breed according to the traditional Shetland standard. As part of our conservation breeding efforts, this little girl will not be part of our future breeding program. That said, she has already secured her place here on the farm, where she’ll spend her days producing delicious eggs, helping keep bugs under control in the garden and orchard, and enjoying life alongside the rest of the flock.

Most importantly, all of the ducklings are healthy, active, and absolutely adorable. We’re looking forward to watching them grow and seeing how they develop as they mature.

Every hatch is a learning experience, and we’re grateful to have these little additions helping strengthen the future of our Shetland flock and the preservation of this rare heritage breed.

Guinevere had herself a little girl! She’s a tiny little thing, but out of all the lambs she’s got the most spring in her. She bounces around the pasture all day long!

Welcome, Fiadh 🤍
(pronounced FEE-ah)

Fiadh is an Irish Gaelic name meaning “deer-like,” which felt perfect for this sweet girl with her little fawn ears 🥹

Gentle, curious, and already playful, she’ll be staying here at Hansen Heritage Homestead as part of our flock’s future.
