**Last call for strawberries** (long post)
Berry's strawberries will be open Monday June 15 10:00 am until sold out. 3503 Hwy 246south. Ninety Six
This will be our last day for the season and it is very bittersweet. We truly appreciate all our customers, especially this season🥰. It was difficult this year-logistically and emotionally. The berries had a lot of freeze damage at the beginning but bounced back and finished up good. The heat now is taking its toll on the fruit.
Hunter took over the business in 2010 after his father, Gary, passed away. He expanded the quantity of plants, experimented with different varieties, and made Berry's strawberries what it is today! As most of you know, Hunter was diagnosed with cancer in December and died the week before the season started on Easter Sunday. He did, however, get to see the first picked bucket and was actually able to taste them (he lost his sense of taste during chemotherapy). We have had many laughs, deep conversations, and made many new friends over the years at the stand. We always knew our "regulars", and we would get concerned if there was someone we didn't see from the previous years. I just want to thank everyone for their support of our small business over the years. His goal was to have the best berries in the upstate, and he did! He was very much a perfectionist, and it showed. No one saw the sleepless nights watching the weather when a freeze was coming, covering the fields for cold weather in 30 mph winds, or the stress he would have when the berries were "just not right". I would laugh and tell people I couldn't stand him from late Feb until June because he was so OCD about the berries and it made him hard to live with🤣. That being said, he would have been very proud of us this year. Friends, family, and our crew all pulled together to make the season successful.
This will be my last season with Berry's strawberries. Starting next year, Berry's strawberries will be taken over by Hunter's sister and her husband-Wendy and Todd Calhoun. They will be striving to maintain the same quality Berry's strawberries have become. Please continue to pray for all of us as we continue to grieve over the loss of Hunter.
