President Donald Trump has filed a massive federal lawsuit against the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department, demanding at least $10 billion in damages over what he says was an unauthorized leak of his tax returns.

The lawsuit claims the government failed to safeguard his confidential tax information, which was illegally disclosed by a former IRS contractor and later published by major media outlets. The contractor was sentenced to prison in 2024, and the Treasury has since cut ties with the firm involved.

Trump’s legal team argues the breach wasn’t just one bad actor — but a systemic failure that exposed private financial records to millions. What started as years of public pressure to reveal his taxes has now turned into one of the largest lawsuits ever filed against the U.S. government.
