I walk past a lot of gardens this time of year with massive, beautifully green peony bushes... and not a single flower on them. The frustrated owner usually tells me they fed them plenty this spring. And that is exactly the problem. There’s a very common type of fertilizer people lovingly apply that basically tells a peony to push out leaves at the total expense of blooms. Oh, and a popular “natural” top-dressing that a lot of folks use, which practically guarantees the stems will rot out with gray mold. Peonies only push out one set of leaves for the whole year—fry them now, and the show is over before it begins. Peonies aren't overly fussy, and they usually sort themselves out, but they are very particular about *when* they eat (don't feed them until the stems hit one specific height) and exactly what the three little numbers on your feed bag say. If you want those heavy, dinner-plate flowers this season, I’ve jotted down the only spring feeding routine you actually need, and the "healthy" fertilizers you need to keep far away from their roots.
