Wasn’t the greatest year for pumpkins. The ground was so wet in June it was hard to get ahead of the grass and weeds. Then ground hogs found both patches and made large burrows in both. I am assuming either they, raccoons or the deer found the melons early. Never saw a one either watermelon or cantaloupe get very large. Then in August the squash bugs hit with full force. So this fall I was surprised with as many pumpkins and squash that I did find in the tall grass. These pictures show about 3/4 of this falls harvest. The last picture is of the loaded pumpkins. As a comparison last year we had 2 full pickup loads 4 rows deep and had to be careful that they didn’t roll off the sides. Last year we had giant pumpkins that weighed close to 200 lbs and had to be rolled into the bucket of our front end loader. The largest this year is about 75 lbs. The majority of my pumpkin vines in the new patch were still green, growing and full of blooms that hadn’t yet set fruit.

This year we have decided to support a startup eatery, Joppa Experience, across from my daughter Bre’s house in Des Moines on 6th. North of downtown. It is also a way that we can express our appreciation for Christine in starting her business there and taking a risk on a corner that had been a troubled spot for years. We are donating the pumpkins to Christine so that she can give to her patrons as a token of her appreciation. We pass our blessings forward so she can bless others as well. Everybody have a great fall.

Another great thing happening during Ghouls Night Out is Narigon Homestead Farms will be outside of the Five One 8 with a pickup full of pumpkins. Very large to very small and of many colors, shapes and sizes. Come purchase your pumpkins and donate to help put future murals in our beautiful downtown. Free Will donation, so come early and buy them all out for a great cause.

Bird report: it has been awhile since I reported because I was just hearing our normal summer residents. But surprisingly that changed this morning. I have three new birds to add to my life list. The first is the Great Tit. More common to Europe and Asia but does venture across the Artic in summer when weather is good and favorable winds. Typically stays in the northern woods. Very much resembles our black capped chickadees. In fact there were several chickadees in the area this morning. Maybe just a coincidence. The 2nd guest is asedge wren. Probably in hanging around near my ponds. The 3rd is a short billed dowitcher which can easily be confused visually with a sandpiper. Again another bird that likes to hang around water. Have a blessed day. Shalom Shalom

Thursday July 27 Edition of this Old Farm House: It didn’t take long to remove the plywould and 1x4 pines that Dad used to fill the gaps before he laid down the plywood. On the rest of the plywood he had used the same box screws but apparently ran out and then switched to what ever he had rather than running to town and getting the same box screw heads. In a 3 foot area he went from star, 2 sizes of box to Philips. Kept having to change drill bits fortunately I had all four. Feeling some what dejected about the cobbled mess, my brother Dan put a positive spin on it. “You have done a good job in preparing the area for the plumbers”. Dad left about 7 of the original floor boards. I am guessing because of the spacing it was left for him to walk on a stable surface so he didn’t have to try and walk on the top edge of the joists. This process took all of a half hour. Changed my focus to Narigon Homestead Farms activities. Today we are loading our first cutting of alfalfa to sell. Since selling the cattle herd my only income is from rent and selling alfalfa. Today, Howard Anderson, and son are raking and baling the 2nd cutting. Returning to the Narigon/Brown Family Farm home this view greeted me as I turned into my driveway. It always reminds me of Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” even though no woods we have a prairie. Choosing the right road makes all the difference in life. When you come down this road, the right road is my driveway to the right. I am including a shot of my favorite tree in my yard. It is a grand old burr oak which I am guessing predates this house. If it could only talk and tell the tales of this farm. It was here when my Great Grandfather Ezra Commodore Brown built this house in 1912 and 17 years later witnessed the horror and grief of my great grandmother Genevieve when with a neighbor she discovered the trampled body of her beloved Ezra in a pasture less than 200 yards from the foot of this tree. It would have stood witnessing the births of my Dad and his 3 siblings and witnessed their joys, sorrows and accomplishments before they moved away to start their own families. If only this tree could talk.Shalom and blessings from Narigon/ Brown Family Farm House and Narigon Homestead Farms.

Good morning. We butchered 3 head last Thursday. 2 of them are spoken for. I have one left it is a 3 year old bull. The butcher said it is extremely lean and recommends that it be ground. The other one that is spoken for is a 3 year old bull as well. I am keeping 1/2 for personal use. Rather than totally grinding I am going with the normal cuts but I am changing my preparation. I am going to crock pot first and then put on the steaks on the grill. The roasts I will put on the grill and then crock pot. Because of the fact that the one doesn’t meet our standard quality I am discounting the price by a dollar. There for a whole is $6.00 a lb and a half $6.25 and 1/4 is 6.50 a lb. The meat is hanging currently dry aging and will hang another 7 days. Then It will be cut and sealed in plastic and can be dry aged another 7 days. Buyers choice. The meat will be ready to deliver by July 4. Let me know if interested.

I am also announcing that Narigon Homestead Farms is out of the cow/ calf business and we will no longer be finishing our own calves on grass. We and the Farm are headed in a different direction. We have 2 remaining to be butchered later this fall. We appreciate everyone’s support over the last 12 years. Have a blessed day. Send me a message if you are interested in purchasing some of our last beef. Thank you.

Our daily rotation of our paddocks but because we went from Section 5 to Section 1 it ends up being almost 1/2 mile cattle drive. Our 18 baby calves have picked up on the process. They walked behind their moms and made it through each of the paddock openings without getting confused. Today went as smoothly as it could have gone. After the drive you could hear a chorus of baby calves bawling for their moms. It was like they were saying “Hey mom we are here. Where are you?” It so much fun watching the calves chase each other. It’s like they are challenging each other to a race to see which is the fastest calf. Even with that going on they made it through the openings. LOL

It’s been a while since I posted pictures of our new calves. I figured people were tired of seeing “another cute baby calf” picture. This spring and early summer has remained very active. Yesterday we had 3 new baby calves on the same day. Not since 2017 when our herd was much bigger have we had 3 new calves on the same day. 2 bull calves and a heifer. The last of Big Red’s progeny, we sold him last year after we rotated him off. We now have had 18 calves with another 17 to go.
