Heat wave and meat chickens! Temps reaching 100 degrees can be deadly to pastured poultry. This is what we do to help them survive so you can feed your family some of the most nutrient dense chicken in Northern Virginia.

Step 1: get the biggest ones out of the pasture shelters. Chickens don’t sweat, they pant and lay their breast in the cool dirt. But what do you do when the dirt is scorching in a full sun field?

Step 2: Give them room to spread out in the shade! Airflow significantly helps them cool and deep shade can drop temps by 10 degrees or more.

Step 3: water, water, and more water! In these temps we relocate the birds to the woods. Here the shade helps keep watering bowels much cooler. We spray water on the ground because evaporating water cools the air and allows them to dig in the moist dirt to cool themselves.

This batch of chickens should be available at the Haymarket Farmers market on July 12th.

The way your food is grown can increase your risk of heart disease.

Heart disease begins in the delicate inner lining of your blood vessels. When this lining is exposed to chronic inflammation:

▪️LDL particles enter the vessel wall

The health of the human gut starts with the microbiome of the food we eat. Our sheep and chickens eat what’s in this photo. There are over 5 different types of grass and forbs in one square foot of this pasture!

Feeding families with compost. Part of being a regenerative farmer is creating abundance from what nature offers us. In late summer we begin creating what’s called a carbonaceous diaper. This diaper catches chicken manure all winter while providing a warm place for chickens to scratch all winter.

In spring we remove the bedding after mo the of manure has created compost. It then gets wet, turned a few times and put in the garden to grow summer vegetables. No chemicals, no sprays, and lots of food! Nature gives us everything we need if we take the time to learn how to use it!
